How old were your dds when they started to...

...develop in the chest area?

I noticed the other day that dd1 is no longer as "flat" as she was. She is 8. Seems a little on the early side to me but I can't remember how old I was when I started developing a bust.

I thought I was going to be quite relaxed about it all but tbh I find it all a bit ... well I don't know really. I suppose it is just evidence of the fact that my child will become an adult someday (which of course I can conveniently forget most of the time!)

Anyway, someone please come and reassure me that I am not an overly neurotic hormonal parent, and to get over myself . And how old your dds were when they started to develop a bust. Gawd.

Not my dd's but I think I started developing at that age as it was shortly followed by my first ever period at 10.....so I'd say it was normal.

WigWamBam · 18/01/2006 14:41

My dd isn't that old yet but I started my periods when I was 9 and had already started to develop a bit of a bust by then, so I'd say it was pretty normal too. Although everyone is different, and what's normal for one child isn't necessarily normal for another.

Miaou · 18/01/2006 14:58

I started my periods aged 12 which (over 20 years ago) was relatively early, so I guess the dds might start early too.

my friends DD started developing early and had her first AF at 9 i was 14 loL! and still waiting for my chest tpo develop

Miaou · 18/01/2006 15:03

We've done the period talk but not the boobies one . She is very averse to anything feminine - I suspect she will either ignore what is happening or get very embarrassed about it. I shall be following her lead for now though - she is pretty good at talking to me about stuff.

Can't really remember, tbh, but I have a kind of feeling that there is a stage where they are no longer completely flat, but still a long way from actually developing iyswim.

Bozza · 18/01/2006 15:06

Definitely had a bit of development at junior school. Would say probably 9. Also started getting pubes at maybe 10. Was not happy.

Tinker · 18/01/2006 15:08
  1. Started a thread here asking if girls had a hormone surge at 8 because her behaviour had become so teenage and emotional. About a month later lots of physical signs as well.
Ellbell · 18/01/2006 23:24

I saw something on the telly about puberty which said that girls always start their periods when they reach a quite specific weight (can't remember what it was - 8 stone 2 or something - but wish I could... would be dead useful to know when my dds were about to hit that mark, though I have loads of time to find out as they are 3 and 5!)

QE2 · 18/01/2006 23:30

dd was definietley noticeable at 9. Things developed very slowly over the next 2 years but when she hit about 11 and a half things really took off. She started her periods when she had just turned 13.

QE2 · 18/01/2006 23:31

the weight thing with starting periods is 7 and a half stones according to Sir Robert Winstone. That's the weight you need to be to sustain a pregnancy. dd was exactly that when hers started. Amazing.

Flossam · 18/01/2006 23:34

I can remember at about 10 that my mum took me to the doctors about the 'lumps' in my chest area, telling me gently that I might have to have the lumps removed, but that it was nothing to worry about (even though I could see that she was very worried). The doctors just said 'puberty' ie, my breast tissue developing. My mum (as nurse) was rather embarrased).

My DD isn't old enough yet either but I was still as flat as a washboard until 12 and a half when I got 'bee stings' (kindly named by my lovely brothers which caused me no end of embarrassment). I asked my mum if I could have a bra not long after that and she laughed and said, "What are you going to fill it with?" and then she bought me one for Christmas which I opened in front of my lovely brothers which caused me to die of embarrassment ... especially since they found it very amusing to 'ping' my bra strap in front of everyone at a Boxing day party ...
When my DD starts developing I am going to make sure that I am a lot more sensitive to her needs than my family was ....
Periods started at 13 and a half and I made sure I went to my big sister for confidential advice

biglips · 18/01/2006 23:58

i was 10 when i started to develop and i was the first girl to wear a bra (was in last year of juniors).....i felt so grown up! ... had my first period when i just turned 12

titchy · 19/01/2006 10:21

If the weight thing is true I'd have never started my periods - weighed less than 7 stone until I went to university, and it's crept up and up each year....LOL

I had a bra in juniors cos I remember being one of the first and all the boys would ping it

fairyjay · 19/01/2006 11:07

My dd is 12, and has worn a bra for a couple of years - not because she needed it, but because I didn't want her to go through the agonies I did, by being a late developer!!

I'm off to weigh her now........!

Miaou · 19/01/2006 18:05

Thanks for all the info. I feel like I am entering a new world here! She is definitely getting a little more stroppy, which I just put down to it being a phase, but maybe it is the beginnings of puberty, who knows.

I had to at the 7 and a half stones thing - I didn't hit that weight until after I got pg with dd1!

The weight is definitely a factor used by doctors as an indicator of puberty. DD has precocious puberty and as she seems to be eating for England at the moment I am sure she will tip over into that weight range soon.

golds · 19/01/2006 18:43

my dd is 8 and has a little chest developing she keeps showing me, she seems so proud

muma3 · 19/01/2006 18:47

tinker - i think i remember that due to having a 8 year old dd1 going through the same . she hasnt developed yet though ty god!

PeachyClair · 19/01/2006 19:05

The weight hing sounds right- I had eating disorder at that age, and didn't start until I was almost 17, at 16 age when i got my first bra (Dad anounced to my Mum it was about 'time you sorted her out'in the middle of a shop! . I remember ebing taught that on average girlls ogt 1st af a year after breasts started to develop.

suedonim · 19/01/2006 19:07

Dd2 was eight but dd1 was quite a bit older, istr. I was quite worried that it meant dd2 had Precocious Puberty but the dr I saw said that PP is only likely if the child has more than one symptom. Dd2 has remained at this stage for ages, for which I'm v grateful!

Re the 7st thing, that must just be a general rule. I was under 7st when I started my periods and under 7.5st when I became pg with ds1 and 2.
