First shoes - recommendations please

My DD is beginning to stand and take a few steps when we hold her but with it being winter she is in tights a lot of the time and is slipping (downstairs is mostly wood and tiled floors).
I know 'proper' shoes are not recommended because she needs to feel the floor with her feet but I need something to stop her slipping and the rubber bits on socks are not really enough.
I keep seeing 'pram shoes' online, does that mean they are for warmth and not for walking in?
Can anyone recommend lightweight shoes with a good sticky sole?

Dd is usually bare foot, this is what they recommend (obviously if your house isn't too cold?).

Our physio also said to wait six weeks until you get any shoes, what about some slippers? Something like this so they have a rubbery sole but are still very soft?

SpottyTeacakes · 14/01/2012 14:10

even better

MedicalEd · 14/01/2012 14:29

Thanks Spotty, these are cute.
I know they are not supposed to wear any shoes and our house isn't cold, in fact downstairs we have underfloor heating so the floors are not cold, so I guess she should be ok barefoot when at home.
But it would be nice to have something to put on her feet when we are out and she might be standing.
Did your physio say to wait six weeks from when she is standing or from when she is walking alone before buying shoes?

I would also recommend the leather slippers for indoor use, and for when outside this soft cruiser or this or this you want something soft, after they have been walking for at least 6 weeks you can move onto a harder soled shoe.

She said from when they are walking but obviously lots of people decide to get them sooner as once they can walk they want to walk everywhere including in muddy parks!

I buy barefoot shoes for my DD, there is a website callled happy little soles, the lady who runs it is amazing and will help you with absolutely anything shoe related...all her shoes are barefoot, so you get protection for little feet but no shaping etc...and her shoes are gorgeous, so original....wonder if i can get commision???hmmm

I've seen some thick socks with full rubber soles like these sites.google.com/site/sockoes/baby-socks-girl-stockings-boys-socks-shoes-products/fashion-baby-blue-shoes in specialist childrens shoe shops designed for cruising and crawler to walker babies. By the time I saw them my son was a little bit too old for them but I thought they were a fantastic idea.

I use the soft leather slipper shoes from this site. Ds has been taking a few steps for a few weeks now but it's been a bit of a slow process so i'm not going to move on to proper shoes for a while yet. He is a long way of running around outside I think! He is only 10 months so maybe that's why its such a slow process.

They're a bit more expensive but Clarks do do "cruising" shoes for pre-walkers. Clarks will fit to the child.

Still I think its best to be barefoot as much as possible - I did seem the odd one out in my nct group to think this though, they all came with little booties on!

My baby love those leather soft shoes, we had shoo shoos and another brand (something star i think) can't remember. They are great for cruising and are so soft it's like wearing nearly nothing. Plus, the double bonus is that they are not easy for little one to remove.

We moved to clarks cruisers when she started cruising the furniture and is still wearing them even though she is walking because in Clarks they suggest that babies are walking confidently for a month before they go into proper shoes.

Prewalkers or pram shoes are really just for decoration/warmth on non walking kiddies

DD1 had those little leather ones from Twinkle Toes until she was about 18 months. She is 3 now and still wears a pair round the house. A good follow-on is Little Blue Lamb, which are very very soft but more structured. See here. Very good prices too, compared to Clarks etc.

We have managed to steer clear of the Clarks shoe "machine" as IMHO the shoes even the ones designed for "cruisers" are very stiff soled for tiny feet.

They are a beautiful selection of shoes pookamoo I wish I'd known whilst my DS was a fresh walker. The Harrys are gorgeous!

pookamoo · 16/01/2012 17:35

The David is very similar to the Harry, poodle and it goes up to a size 10...

(no I don't work for them!) I just think their shoes are so much nicer than Clarks, more colourful and imaginitive. I have daughters and I just don't want the same pink cr@p! Not to mention the bonus of the flexible soles.

Lyftiduft · 16/01/2012 21:18

they're lovely pookamoo, thanks, never seen them before and have now bookmarked :)
