Oooooh - interesting - both my DD's were very conventional (ish) ...

DD1 said "dadadada" first, followed shortly by "Chris" (my best friend's DH's name - slightly worrying!!)and then "mamamama" (Hurrah!) "Proper" words, erm (she still does say a lot - she is 2) probably her 1st proper word was "that" or "no" (she's good at that! ) She says "Good girl" to everyone and I mean everyone - "Good Girl Daddy", "Good Girl Random Man I Have Just Met in the Post Office Queue"!!!

DD2 (8 months) only says "mamamama" - Ha!Ha!

CaptainDippy · 16/01/2006 20:43

Lots of my friends' more articulate children say "shoes"!!

they both made mamma and dadda noises, and hissed like snakes and said brmmmm for cars etc, before shoes, but shoes was the first real word. Ds1's second word was 'hole'. Ds2 (13 months) can also say 'chair', when he means put me in my chair I'm starving. I would have expected something more like milk or no to come before hole, but ds1 has always been an individual.....

dd1 - dadda

dd2 mama and has barely said it since

singersgirl · 17/01/2006 11:44

Can't really remember. There was a phase when kind of 'proto-words' started to become words and I'm not sure I know what the first words were.

Among DS1's first words were 'dada', 'ta' (cat) and 'toe' (stone), coz I remember him saying them on holiday when he was about one. I remember him mooing with a toy cow at 8 months, but don't know if that counts!

DS2 said 'mummum' for 'food' and something like 'ulk' for 'look!' a lot around 11 or 12 months.

FrannytheQuinoaEater · 17/01/2006 11:46

Ds didn't have one real first word, but dp was one of those weirdos who don't speak for ages and then start on sentences. His first words ever were "polystyrene lady"

GillL · 17/01/2006 11:48

Dd (9 months) says mama, dada and cat so we count cat as her first proper word.

Marne · 17/01/2006 11:50

DD's first words were,

Grandad
triangle
and no

wannaBe1974 · 17/01/2006 11:53

Dadda and ummum (when he was hungry), but his first proper, very clear word was bubble (the cat's name)

bakedpotato · 17/01/2006 11:56

Wannabe, snap, DS's first word was/is bubble (he just said it last week). We have no cat and no bubbles to speak of, but he seems to like making that particular noise.

starlover · 17/01/2006 11:58

ds is coming up for one and says mama, dada, guk (quack/duck), moo and durdle

staceym11 · 17/01/2006 12:48

my dds first was at 8 month and was dada, of course lol, but now shes 15 month she doesnt seem to learn words but generally sentences, she says 'daddy gave it to me' and the other day she said 'this ball knocks it over' and proceeded to know the block tower over with the ball, is this normal, she scares me sometimes when she talks in sentences, isnt she too young???

hunkermunker · 17/01/2006 12:51

DS said "bubble" first (after babbling "mamama") and "bis" (please) - polite boy

Prettyfull · 17/01/2006 13:07

My dd's first word were..

Mama then dadda and nanna.

SalJxx · 17/01/2006 13:29

After the usual sounds mama and sounds DS2 said cat at 10 months and could mimic it whining for it's breakfast.

Now at 11 months he can say mama with meaning and never says dada . He can also say fish, and a sound thats a bit like whats that, he also growls back at his dads belly and shreiks with delight whenever DS1 is near him.
