5 year old DD lost her first tooth. Isn't this too young?

Evening all!

I'll keep it brief as the title pretty much sums up my question.

I always thought that teeth weren't supposed to come out till at least the age of 7 or 8. I feel gutted in a way. I know it sounds strange, it's only a tooth afterall, but she seems too young to have lost her first one! To top it all off, she lost it in the playground at school, which is awful. I wasn't even there to comfort her. If it were her second, third etc I wouldn't be as bothered, but the idea of her first little tooth lost in the grass or mud, I find a little heartbreaking.

Anyway, going back to my original question, how common is it to lose your tooth this young?

Thanks Smile

No - my dd was 5 when she lost the first one. She is nearly 8 and all the front ones have gone.

TheBolter · 10/01/2012 20:41

Dd2 lost 4 teeth before her sixth birthday!

Blackpuddingbertha · 10/01/2012 21:00

DD is coming up 5.5 and lost her first one just before Christmas. Second one will be out in the next week or so going by wobbliness. The replacement tooth for her first one is just starting to show now.

She's not the first in her class to loose a tooth, youngest had just gone 5 yrs for the first one and is now 4 down six months later. There are some 6 year olds in the class though without a single wobbly one who are desperate to join in!

My five year old lost his first tooth at the weekend. Loads of comments on how early that is.

He had teeth early, though, which my mam claims is an indicator and I suspect is bollocks.

It's normal

Seona1973 · 10/01/2012 21:20

ds was 5 in October and I noticed his first wobbly tooth 2 days ago. He says there are a few children in his class that have lost a tooth already.

wigglybeezer · 10/01/2012 21:24

My three started losing theirs at four, DS3 has 12 adult teeth and he is only seven, but then they got thier baby teeth early too, DS1 had two teeth at four weeks old! HV didn't believe me until she peered in...

LondonMumsie · 10/01/2012 21:28

I have a friend whose baby was born with two teeth!

redrubyshoes · 10/01/2012 21:29

Perfectly normal.

outofbodyexperience · 10/01/2012 21:32

Absolutely normal. Every yr r teacher I know keeps special envelopes in their desk so that the damn things don't get lost on the way home. Dd1 had lost all eight of her front teeth by yr2, and all of her milk teeth by ten. The others were a bit later, but all had lost their first tooth at 5. Dd2 had a full set of teeth by her first birthday though, with most of them between 3 and 6 mos, so I figure that if you get them early, they fall out early too!

sevenbubbles · 11/01/2012 08:22

Can I ask when the front top came out and when it grew back? Just wondering when dd's peers are going to catch up with her gappy lookGrin

Glenshee · 12/01/2012 13:02

My DS lost his top front tooth when he was 5. Looking back I think he lost it due to a bad fall from his bike several months before. There was lots of blood after the fall but I checked all the teeth and they seemed fine.

I then read on the internet that it may take months for the damaged tooth to fall out.

DS is now 7, lost his both front bottom teeth naturally, and we have big strong new teeth in place of those, but the new tooth at the top is yet to make its appearance.

Dentist says it's nothing to worry about.

Which tooth did your DD lose? Top or bottom? Usually it's the bottom ones that should go out first....

CecilyP · 13/01/2012 20:56

Is it a bottom middle one? If so, that is fairly normal. My average sized DS lost his first 2 teeth at 5.8 and the new ones came through quite soon after. Don't be too heartbroken OP, DS's teeth came out at night and we couldn't find them, so think he must have swallowed them. I doubt if your DD needed comforting; the roots of the baby teeth shrivel and die and the teeth just literally fall off.

hardboiledpossum · 13/01/2012 21:07

I have little twin nephews who are 5 and they have both lost their top front two teeth. I think if you get them early you are more likely to loose them early.

Littlefish · 13/01/2012 21:15

When dd lost hr first tooth at just 5, the dentist asked me how old she was when she got her first tooth. That suggests to me that perhaps there is a set amount of time between first teeth gained and then lost. Dd had lost 8 teeth by six and a half.

Babyblade · 20/01/2012 10:40

This thread is so reassuring :) - my DD is only 4yrs, turning 5 next month, and we discovered 2 lower middle teeth with a distinct wobble this morning. Good to know we can relax a bit and wait for nature to take it's course.

KernowMoss · 04/11/2019 11:33

Hi, my not quite 5 year old son has lost all 4 front teeth and has his lower and upper adult teeth showing through. It seems so early, I'm wondering if anyone else has had experience of this, and if it meant earlier development in other areas. Thanks
