5 year old holding his breathe - is this a habit or could it be more serious??

My 5 year old ds has always been really active and full of beans like any other boy so never really noticed this. Yesterday dh asked if I'd noticed ds taking random deep breathes quite regularly. I hadn't noticed and feel bad for not noticing as should have if it's been happening for a few weeks now.
Today dh pointed this weird breathing thing ds is doing and I can't stop watching him as he seems to be holding his breathe for 10 seconds or so then taking a deep breathe. When I questioned ds as to why he is doing this he said he just likes to hear his own breathe but now can't stop thinking if there is something wrong.

Am hoping it's just a habit he has picked up.

Has anybody experienced something similar and should I take him to doctors?

My DS is 7. He was doing it for some weeks - if not months, until recently. Especially when sat down, and especially if relaxed. Always at dinner time. When he was busy he was less likely to do it, but was still doing it, just with less of a frequency.

I was going to take him to the doctor, but my DH had a view it's not worth it, - he thought it's something like a very mild attack of asthma, and isn't worth being treated in any way. (DS had eczema and mild asthma as a baby, so there is likelihood of it surfacing again). As we're both working full-time, we decided not to bother, and it eventually disappeared on it's own.

I think it was triggered my stress / anxiety (although can't exactly say where anxiety itself came from), and when things settled, it went away.

For a 5 year old tension / anxiety may come from struggles with speech. A lot of kids stammer around this age, and this also fades away completely for many. It could be that there's too much going on in the little brain, and it developed this habit in an attempt to cope with it all.

Would be very interested to hear what doctors say, as we've not got round to visiting one.

Thanks for your story glenshee it's really interesting to know I'm not alone on this. We also have held back in going to docs but think
I'll monitor him for few weeks then decide wether to ring them.

He does it when at home playing with his toys or watching tv so suppose he is relaxed too. His teacher said he hadn't been doing it at school and he breathes normally in his sleep.

I am about to have dc2 in the next few weeks so it could be subconsciously affecting him this way.

My dh also has mild asthma so we linked it to that at first. He also has a cold so maybe he finds it hard to breathe regularly through his nose.

If I do take him to doctors I'll update thread so you can see what was said. Again thanks for your reply really helped.
