Not sure I why I'm asking really as DS1 was very similar.

But DS2 is such a fidget. He is a climber and into everything. It usually doesn't worry me, just gets a bit tiresome at times. But we went to a friends house today who has older children. I spent my whole time chasing him round while the others sat chatting. She seemed surprised how into everything he is and a bit panicked by him touching stuff. She said her youngest wasn't like that.

Am I the only one!!! I thought all toddlers were like this. Maybe I am living in my own little bubble!

Ds was like this, he's now 5 and when he left nursery last Summer the teacher said shed never, in 20 years, known a child with so much energy.

Dd is 15 months now. She has been walking 5 months and climbs EVERYWHERE all the time. My mum bought her a mini armchair for Christmas - I came in the lounge to find her having pushed it over to the mantelpiece and with one foot on each arm she was pulling down everything she could reach.

I spent the whole afternoon at dh's aunts house stopping her going in cupboards, climbing up stairs and trying to go through the bin.

I don't know if its abnormal but you're not alone!

smithster · 05/01/2012 22:25

my Ds is just like this, think it's a boy thing. He's coming up to 22 months now and the latest thing is dragging chairs around the kitchen so he can climb on them to get in the cupboard where the biscuits are kept. perfectly normal toddler behaviour I think and he will not sit still unless Fireman Sam is on! Plenty of exercise helps.

smearedinfood · 05/01/2012 22:25

You are not alone. Although we've slowed down a bit at 17 months as we interested in talking now (sighs relief).

oreocrumbs · 05/01/2012 22:28

DD is 16 mo and the same, she doesn't stop, she climbs, re arranges, lifts and carries all sorts. She could climb a ladder before her 1st birthday (well 3 rungs). She can climb in and out of her cot, she is wild, Mind you I put this behaviour down to DP being part ape Grin

Apparently my DB and I were the same and now we are a real pair of lazy articles

Smokedsalmonbagel · 05/01/2012 22:30

Sounds like we are in the same boat!

DS1 was always a climber and never sat still. He will be 5 in a few months and has calmed down a bit!

Your DD sounds just like DS2. He is also 15 months! It takes the fun out of going to other peoples houses. Although I think I am resigned to this stage and following him round.

DS2 yesterday tipped over the wash basket and climbed on it to reach the kitchen work tops! Luckily he couldn't reach the knife I'd just used to make lunch!

I keep asking DH how we ended up with 2 fidgets!

FunnysInTheGarden · 05/01/2012 22:32

Both of my DS's were the same. DS2 started walking at 9 months Shock so now at 22 months we seem nearly over the worst of it. Mind you he did lock himself in the bathroom a couple of days ago and also broke a glass vase yesterday, so perhaps a while to go. He doesn't need watching all the time now though.

FunnysInTheGarden · 05/01/2012 22:33

it is exhausting though! My mum who had 3 girls could never really understand how full on two boys are.

Smokedsalmonbagel · 05/01/2012 22:34

Thanks!
It didn't help that the other toddler there (18 months) just sat still and played with toys! Although he is very clingy which isn't much fun for his Mum either.

ahhhhhpushit · 05/01/2012 22:36

Oh yes DS like this too. Walked after just turning 9m and is now 14m and runs around the house like a total loony. Climbs up on the chairs and sofas, up the stairs, and today I found his standing upright on the top level of his 3 story garage Grin.

He opens and closes all the doors, all the cupboards over and over. Runs in and out of the room, closes and opens he patio door, brings all his toys in the front room from the playroom and then back out again.

I get exhausted just watching him!

I am very much hoping it he will slow down soon!

leftmymistletoeatthedoor · 05/01/2012 22:39

I don't think its a boy thing. Ds was hyper but dd is actually worse for climbing, much worse.

All of the other little ones in our family are well behaved much quieter and I feel quite on edge sometimes.

oreocrumbs · 05/01/2012 22:54

I live in the hope that as DD is so wild active now she will settle earlier, and this time next year when all my friends with calm placid well behaved children are hitting the terrible twos and wondering what hit them DD will chill out and I can drink a whole Wine cup of tea again!

I won't hold my breath though....Grin

matana · 05/01/2012 23:05

Snap.

Which would you rather: a dullard who sits in the corner and only speaks when spoken to, or an infinitely fascinating little ball of energy who entertains everyone he comes into contact with? These little ones were born not to be led and i feel quite an affinity with this philosophy!

My DS's CM told us our DS is the most physically active child she has ever looked after except her own son. For this reason she adores him and admits he's her favourite.

One day your DS will understand rules, manners, kindness etc and will turn into an amazing young man, given the right encouragement and channelling of his energies. To hell with other people and their boring kids.

TheArmadillo · 05/01/2012 23:13

The other afternoon dd (17 months)
rode her toddler sized rocking horse by standing on its back
climbed the sofa and ran along it until she fell off
climbed on the coffee table, danced and then walked backwards till she fell off
climbed the high back chair and used it as a slide repeatedly, then decided to dangle over the back of it till she fell off (dh caught her - she thought it was brilliant), and then just repeatedly flung herself off the seat part as it was funny Hmm
then climbed onto the other sofa and flung herself off over the arm as I managed to catch her by one leg which is also hilarious apparently.
Tried to climb the baby gate and got stuck
She always dives off the sofa head first when she wants to get down presuming someone will catch her, usually with no warning.

Ds was the same though he was more about climbing without the flinging off and escaping through doors/gates (and slamming them in your face/doing the locks). I couldn't do coffee mornings/meet ups unless they were in a play place as he was so miserable and naughty if you tried to contain him. Plus I spent all my time running round after him.

The only thing dd doesn't do is climb out of her cot - ds was out before 1yo as he could climb fall out. She seems happy to stay in there.

She does use my (waist length) hair as a kind of abseiling/climbing rope.

TheArmadillo · 05/01/2012 23:15

One uspide is they don't get fat - ds is 7yo and still can't sit still. But it means he burns off loads of energy even playing computer games as he bounces around the room (thank god for wireless controllers!)

leftmymistletoeatthedoor · 05/01/2012 23:19

Lol TheArmadillo ds (5) doesn't sit and watch a dvd, he reenacts it as it plays. I could see him fighting a losing battle with himself twitching away in the cinema the other day...

hermionestranger · 05/01/2012 23:23

Another Mum of two fidgets. DS1 is 6 and full of boundless energy! Thank god it was dry for a bit today! He spent all of yesterday on Wii fit and then at gymnastics and still had oodles of energy. We don't normally do the wii but the shite weather meant we'd been stuck in for two days, rain is ok. It the wind! Today was a play centre Nd my DP's farm for the afternoon! Grin Grin Grin ds2 is 13mo and a little bundle of energy, climbing, crawling at a million miles an hour, he's found his feet so is practising walking now too, into everything, thank god or cupboard locks and stair gates! At others houses though I never sit still. U need a portable baby gate just so I can at least keep him contained to one floor when visiting friends and family!

onelittlefish · 05/01/2012 23:27

Not alone. I like to think high spirits are also a sign of high IQ.

georgie22 · 05/01/2012 23:39

I can completely identify with these tales of active toddlers. Our 14 month old dd is non-stop running, climbing, exploring etc. which she does with the most enormous smile and chuckles constantly! She obviously thinks that everyone loves her (which i suppose is largely true!) and she is there to entertain. My parents look after her one day a week and constantly say how active she is compared to me at that age. She unloaded and loaded the washing machine numerous times yesterday which she seemed to thoroughly enjoy! She's a delight to be with but she does cause me anxiety when we go to places that are not child friendly. A friend tells me this inquisitiveness etc. are signs of an intelligent child so let's hope that's true!

MustControlFistOfDeath · 06/01/2012 00:10

Sounds exactly like my 13mo DS, walked at 9mo (ooh stealth boast Grin ) constantly climbing/running/dragging furniture around/never still/doesn't sleep through the night/obsessed with anything electrical/etc etc etc.
He's like a bottle of pop.
I'm knackered.

My DM recently said ''Oh he's so lively. It's a wonder you're not as thin as a rake.'' Er cheers mum Hmm Sad

startail · 06/01/2012 00:34

DD1 was like this. If it shouldn't be climbed, she climbed it. If it shouldn't be fiddled with, she picked it up. If it was an age appropriate toy, she totally ignored it.
She also vanished in the blink of an eye and would be found climbing and/ or fiddling with something.

The difference really struck home when DD2 vanished at someone I knew only slightly's house. I suddenly realised firstly I hadn't been watching her like a hawk and secondly I wasn't panicking.
Why because DD2 had simply found a box of toys and was playing quietly.

mrspepperpotty · 06/01/2012 07:38

My DS1 was like this. I remember him climbing up the outside of a play tent while all the other babies in my NCT group played nicely inside the tent! He's now 6, still active but also very well-behaved.

Now DS2 is the same. DD was more of a sitter though.

Smokedsalmonbagel · 06/01/2012 19:50

Thanks again!

Think I was feeling like the odd one out yesterday.
Although at toddler group today he was the only one trying to open all the doors, moving the chairs around and trying to climb on the table.

Matana - I so agree. Both my boys are so full of life, they are such fun.

This afternoon we had a 16 month friend over who is much more lively and it was much more fun watching them run round.

Ha ha Armadillo! I've a stone less than my pre pregnancy weight because of DS (pleasurable side effect of having a busy toddlerGrin)

So weird to see my post on this thread from 2012! My super active DS1 (who was 6 when I posted) is now a typical 17yo who lies in bed all day at the weekend. He does play football though. My similarly active DS2 is now 14yo and is still a ball of energy but also a sweet lovely boy. And DD (who I described as a "sitter" in my post above) is a very active and sporty 16yo.
