Cruising since 7months but no sign of walking!

My DS has always been strong and was crawling at 6 months and cruising well at 7 months, however he is now 11months and still there's no sign of him walking, he doesn't even stand unaided. Is this normal? Starting to worry! How can I encourage him along?

Don't worry, they all do things at different times. My friend's DD was very young to stand and walk holding a finger, but then didn't walk unaided until 14 months! It's to do with confidence and desire as well as physical strength. Your DS sounds like he's doing fine.

BertieBotts · 05/01/2012 15:33

DS was the same - didn't walk until 16 months. I don't think he felt the need to!

He did miss out the wobbly one year old walking stage though and went a straight to confident toddler walking, which was less nerve wracking.

My eldest was 15 months when he started walking. Don't worry. All kids start things at different times.

Actually, I'd say enjoy it. My ds1 refused. Refused. Refused. Point blank. To get in a buggy after 18 months as he wanted to walk everywhere.

Thanks everyone! He's a very happy and quick crawler and I wasn't worried until I started reading about how most babies walk around age 1(!?). Need to stop reading these things and just relax. As I say, he is able to get to places he wants to so that's all that matters at this stage I guess! Thanks for putting my mind at rest!

My dd was an amazingly quick crawler at 7 months and cruised soon after. She didn't stand unaided until she was 1 and then didn't walk until 14 months. She's fine. Don't worry Smile.

I dont think walking is as closely related to cruising as you would expect. DD cruised from 8 months but walked at 11.5 when she could stand without pulling herself up. I had been expecting her to randomly let go and she just didnt.

bigdog · 08/01/2012 09:09

I agree with brettgiril - my DD was cruising from 8 months and everyone said 'oooooh, it won't be long until she's walking!' - well it was - she didn't her first unaided steps untiil she was 22 months old :/
Still, she never fell over once - I reckon she was just taking her time and being cautious

DS didn't crawl until he was 13, but was doing some crazy worm thing and he got around quite fast. He started walking about 15 months.

They will start walking when his legs are strong enough and his co-ordination is there. There's not much point 'encouraging' before he is ready, he will do it in time.

It's worth saying DS is on the small side (always between 9th and 25th centile) and coupled with the he has inherited my short legs and long body Hmm so I think that contributed too.

mathanxiety · 08/01/2012 20:37

You should be careful what you wish for. After walking (two weeks after) comes the dreaded climbing.

whenskiesaregrey · 08/01/2012 20:39

Ha, obviously my post meant to say DS didn't crawl until 13 months!!

zebras · 08/01/2012 20:45

My ds was another late developer - cruising from 9 months, then walking even quite a long distance outside, unable/unwilling to let go of my hand - only properly started walking at 16 months - drove me nuts but he did get there in his own sweet time.

whatstheetiquette · 08/01/2012 20:53

My DD cruised for months and months before walking. But when she finally walked, she was very secure and didn't fall. It seemed like she was actually afraid. She had taken a few steps around 5-6 months before she finally walked and she fell over. I don't know if a baby can actually remember things like that?!

Pinetreeland · 09/01/2012 12:54

DS is 11 months and still cruising and walking holding one finger. He has been doing that for over a month now and I was hoping he will start walking on his own soon! I guess you guys are right, it may just be a confident thing.

Perhaps you want to get him some cruising shoes to let him walk outdoors? If he gets distracted by the excitment of walking outside he may forget to hold onto things and starts to walk independently?
