Weaning

Hi I have a fab little DD who is 6 months old. We have started weaning her but she is uninterested in food. She will have one spoonful if we are lucky then takes great pleasure in blowing raspberries with the rest. I am starting to worry about her food intake. She is breastfed and will take expressed milk from a beaker. I am starting back work full time later this month - financial needs. Any tips or advice. My DS was fab with food - couldn't get enough from the start lol.

I started weaning mine at 5.5mo, she was not interested in the slightest and just used to spit it out, until about 6.5mo when she just suddenly 'got it'! Now at 11mo people marvel at what a good eater she is, she loves her fruit and veg and will try anything.

I guess what I'm trying to tell you is it is early days and don't worry. try giving her some finger food - steamed or roast veg, toast etc to chew/suck. don't make a fuss if she doesn't eat it, just take it away and try again later.

Agree with all of timeoutofmind's post. Don't let meals become a power struggle. She is still very young - some babies are slower than others to get the hang of solids.

Lots of babies take a long time to get going with weaning. My DD was nearly 10 months before she really started to eat more than a few spoonfuls a meal. It is unfortunately one of these things that can't be forced. Just keep offering food and when she's ready she'll take it.

Thanks all - she is just so different to my DS. Will try the steamed food to suck on sounds good - she loves putting things in her mouth -off to do some carrots x

Just to add, if you are exclusively breastfeeding, she will get everything they need from your breastmilk up to 12 months old. I was told this by our local Breastfeeding support group as I was worried about this too. Obviously, you keep introducing foods during this time and she will digest some but don't get worrying yourself if she isn't taking any. A friend at my bf group had the same problem and her little one eventually started eating/being interested in food at about 8 months. Every LO is different ;o)
