Advice - baby 'daydreaming' / mini trance - ASD

My very alert year old DS can sometimes gaze on something for a few seconds - or longer, hard to know how long for - and will then come back or I'll distract him etc. Today my mum mentioned it and the way she mentioned it worried me - I assumed babies did this from time to time? But then I made the mistake of googling - came up alongside ASD....

I've got no other concerns with DS - v alert, interested, sociable, babbler - except that he points with his whole hand not index finger - but should I worry about this? Or am I being neurotic?

Thanks

How old is he? My DS (4mo) does it sometimes but it's usually when he's very tired. I think the Baby Whisperer calls it the 'thousand mile stare' & says its a sleep cue.

Sounds like a normal year old to me - agree re: sleep cues. Dont fret about it - it's easy to worry about little things, but I dont think you can draw any conclusions like ASD based on what you've seen

As an adult, if I'm Engaged in something like a book or tv, it can take a few tries to get my attention.
I would not panic about Asd yet, but would keep an eye and maybe see GP, only because there are abstances which are linked with fits, that might need checking out.

It's not when he is engaged in a book but more 'taken' with something he sees...

My sister who's in the medical profession just said most babies do it - she dismisses anything to do with ASD but said if he did it as he got older to then maybe get checked out re; absent seizures but she thought it v v unlikely

Then she asked me why I was sometimes preoccupied with ASDSad I ask myself the same question - it just feels like I'm on alert for it

I would just mention it to your gp in case they are petit mal absences. Doubt it but I would check just to make sure. Definitely doesn't sound like he is asd though.
