Cause for concern or normal toddler?

DD is 2.9, 3 in March. She's always been a bit behind with her milestones. She didn't lift her head off the floor until she was 4 months, didn't sit until 9 months, crawled at 12 months and walked at 16 months. She never rolled over until about 18 months and still can't sit up from lying on her back.

I took her to the drop-in physio when she was 2 as the HV was a little concerned with a few things at her 2 year check. The physio said she was quite flat footed and has too much movement in her hips but they can't do anything until she's 3.

She's constantly falling over, even from standing still. She's been in A&E 3 times this year due to falls, twice with a sprained ankle that she refused to walk on. The first time was from falling off the bed which I put down to just rough and tumble but the second was from falling over sideways from standing still and resulted in a bad sprain.

She has only just learnt how to step up kerbs without holding on to anything and can't manage anything bigger than a kerb. She struggles to walk up the stairs 'like an adult' and she can't climb well at all. Also she has a big crease through one of her thighs but not the other one.

I know these things can just be normal toddler things but I'm starting to worry now. I flagged things up as she was growing whenever we saw the HV but I was always told to leave it a few weeks as she would get there eventually which she did so then they said there was nothing wrong.
Obviously if there is nothing wrong and she just needs time to develop then that's great but if there is cause to concern I'd rather things were done now than later.

I took her to the GP recently and told him my concerns and he brushed me off without checking her over and said there was nothing wrong.

So should I just leave it for now and wait or is it worth me seeing another GP or HV?

Thanks.

hmm yes I would definitely go and see a different GP or HV and demand a referral to whoever it is that deals with that kind of thing

the uneven creases is a sign of hip dysplasia isn't it??

Apparently so which I wasn't aware of until I read a thread on here. I never really noticed it until I met DP (who isn't her real dad) when she was 9 months and he pointed it out. No one else has ever seemed concerned by it but it's a big crease.

Thanks for replying.

Don't trust HV's. Yes it does seem worrying, but I hope you get it sorted out soon.

DD is a similar age and seems to have problems with coordination and falls over quite a bit. However, as the HV has marked these issues in the past I think it would be worth chasing up even if it's just to put your mind at rest.

I am afraid I don't know anything about the crease so I don't know if this is significant. Can you possibly make another appointment with the physio to do a further assessment nearer her birthday?

My HV noticed an extra crease in my DDs leg at her 10 month check and recommended I take her to the GP. The GP didn't think anything was wrong because she sat up at 6 months and was crawling (evenly) at 7 months , but made a hospital appointment for DD anyway, to have an X-ray, so I'm a bit surprised they haven't referred you at all.

I would definitely go and see a different GP as I understood IF there was a problem, the younger they are, the easier it is to mend/sort out. DDs extra crease was very big as well (still is) but all is normal.

It might just be that moving around isn't your DDs priority if you see what I mean? Mine couldn't wait to get up and about, but then on the other hand, her speech is quite delayed compared to most her age.

WaftyCrank · 21/12/2011 22:56

Thanks for the replies, I think I'll definitely take her back to the GP. I need to make an appointment for Friday anyway to have her ankle checked as it happened last weekend so I'll mention it.

You might be right NewShooz, DS was running and climbing everywhere by 15 months but had no speech and DD wasn't moving but talking in sentences.

Hope all goes well Wafty.

whilst I agree that kids are completely different and do things at different rates I think the fact that this child is coming up for 3 and is falling over from standing still really ought to be taken seriously by HCP's

if it was just a case of her being slow to develop walking skills that would be different IMO

lisad123 · 24/12/2011 23:17

I would get her checked out. Dd2 has hypomobility and is forever falling over. She is better now she has special boots but still not as good as her peers.
