My 5 Year old is driving me insane....

My dd is 5. She will be 6 in the spring. She has always been a very "good" child and was a pleasure to spend time with. But since a few months ago, her behaviour is making life very difficult.
She is, according to her teacher, perfectly behaved at school. At home, she is great when everything is to her liking. But as soon as something upsets her, it's like a case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hide.... Today for example, she was in a great mood since waking up, because she knew she was going to a birthday party. Everything was fine until we came home in the late afternoon. She was tired and started playing with lego. She couldn't make something work so in a fit of anger she broke one of those flat base things for Lego. Tidying up tonight, I noticed she had scribbled something on the wooden floor. I am so upset with her. When in a bad mood, if she doesn't want to do something, she will scream "Noooooooo, I don't want it like that" etc.
I am dreading the Christmas break!!!
I get so upset because I used to take such pride in my parenting skills. Sad

sounds like my 5yo dd. stroppy little madam. it's normal.

I try and distract her/ have a star chart if she needs to pull her socks up.

I like to have a roll of plain wallpaper for her to roll across the floor and draw on, I do one half, she does the other it's great way to pass the time, or make loads of plastercine food to sell in a pretend shop...

they're all tired, it's the end of a long term, awful weather, stressed out etc.

Sounds ever so familiar! I think no attention for bad behaviour and attention and praise for good... That is however easier said than done!! My DD will be 5 just after x ams, but I swear she thinks she's 15! What to do?!

Don't get too upset...lets all just hope this is just a phase they all go through...at least she saves it for you!!! Really not looking forward to the teenage years!!!

Take heart that even the loveliest of kiddies give their parents hell behind closed doors from time to time!! xx

let her play in your jewellery/ makeup/ nailvarnish if she's good.

Ha ha I posted a similar post bout 3 weeks ago
If I could link to it I would!
Loads of folks came straight back to say their reception child was the same.
Def a phase, dd has much improved this last week. I upped punishment that every time she was rude or naughty she would lose one minute of her 20 mins on laptop per day.

Thank you ladies.
I think I will just try to completely ignore the sulking/ screaming, for my own sanity...

Thank you for posting this-my 4.5 yr old is also driving me utterly bonkers. Shes more like a 14 yr old than a 4 yr old. She huffs at me, rolls her eyes, doesn't want to do anything that isn't totally to her liking and loses her temper majestically and dramatically over the slightest thing.
