Hand and arm reaching, and pointing

My year old DS has, in past few weeks, acquired a fondness for reaching with his arm and little hand. It does it A LOT. Sometimes it makes sense and you can see, for example, that he wants water etc - other times it appears a bit aimless, if cute.

But is this a percusor to pointing - or is it pointing, if that makes sense?

Sounds like he's doing fine. :)

My 11mo does this and I think its pointing as she tends to do it when something is of interest or if she wants her water etc

according to my HV it is pointing, even if they use their whole arm or hand :)

Thanks Brightonbleach - that's interesting and good to know

i remember when my niece learnt how to do this, must have been around this age. she did a little grunt at the same time so pretty much every time we saw her she was being carried around with her arm out grunting to say where she wanted to go.

she was being carried around with her arm out grunting to say where she wanted to go. - HAHA - yes that's my DS.

I'm hoping arm reaching counts as pointing as PP said.

My DS4 is 13months and does not point. He does reach for things while staring at them, then me, then back at the thing he wants (so he's telling me what he wants), he will also make squeeking/grunting noises (he has good handful of words but none are used for asking for things).

oldmum42 - given what you've described, I'm not sure what the difference would be if your DS pointed...? It sounds like he's trying to achieve the same result by reaching with hand and arm?

Sorry, as an add on to previous message - is it an issue that they don't use their index finger? I suppose I'm trying to ascertain whether that's coming...

I don't think so, its a precursor before they get the full-on realisation of the intricacies of their hands to my mind, and from research, and mine and other babies... as long as they're curious about the world theres nothing to worry about to me :)

brightonbleach · 18/12/2011 16:18

not an issue, totally normal to use whole hand before using a finger apparently, was what I was trying to say Grin

Thanks Brightonbleach; I'm having a neurotic day Blush

My 8 month old does this and makes a little grunt as she does it too. I didn't know it was pointing I thought she just wanted to reach for everything.

gobbly everyone has them, believe me! for instance my boy is a late talker and I have worried myself to death about it on many occassions, but now as he is pulling bricks out of a box naming each colour and many shapes I wonder why we put ourselves through so much worry in general when they all develop in their own unique fashion. Maybe sometimes it WAS better years ago like my mam says, when there wasn't so many books and information on all the 'milestones' they 'should' be hitting and so on.... :)

once they can point they delight in it, my LO liked me to name everything and everyone he pointed at (at the point where he couldnt) so that was exhausting but exciting at the same time...

brightonbleach · 18/12/2011 17:06

mine is 25m now btw

gobblygook · 18/12/2011 20:22

Thanks so much brightonbleach. I appreciate that. It's hard not to worry, and yes Google is the enemy! They all do develop in their own fashion and he's doing brilliantly. It's just me. Being a PFB neurotic!
