Previously great sleeper wreaking havoc!

Ds is 2.3 and up until recently has been a great sleeper, happily going into his bed and sleeping a good 12 hours.
This last week he won't go to bed without howling, wakes every hour screaming and can't be comforted. Naps are exactly the same he won't go down and howls when left.
I am trying putting him back to bed each time he gets up and leaving him in ever increasing intervals but it is not getting better.
The only thing he seems to want is to be in my bed and even then he wakes every hour. If I sit with him til he falls asleep he nods off but then wakes an hour later.
Help!!!

Does he have all his teeth now? We had a few nights like that when the final back teeth were coming through..

No but last night he coughed pretty much all night and then sicked up some gunk so I guess thats why he has been out of sorts. He slept with me and only had about 6 hours in all as he coughed so much.

must be a bug, they all get them and it wrecks the lovely routines and good habits, I feel your pain - an ear infection followed by a nasty sickness bug took all the joy out of his normally lovely 12hour sleeps last month! They get past it though. I think coughing is one of the worst, as it gets worse at night and when you lay down - I've given my 25m old a pillow because of the cough last month and he's sleeping really well, being slightly elevated might help? Also theres a kiddy version of olbas oil you can get at Boots, sprinkle around the bedding about 30 mins before they go to bed (so it can dry) and it keeps their breathing a bit more open. night night! Thanks guys, I propped his bed up on some books and he already has a pillow so although he came in with me around 11 he went to sleep with daddy sitting by the door and didnt have a coughing fit til about 4am.
He slept better with me last night too and only woke me a couple of times, once I opened my eyes and his face was about an inch from mine and he said oh hello mummy. I nearly fell out of bed I got such a fright!
