Primary Teeth

My 6 year old daughter has just lost her first tooth - she is very proud! But when I looked at the gap, her new tooth is coming out further back from the gap left by the baby tooth. Is that normal or is it going to be a problem. It's much wider than the wee gap that her baby tooth has left.

It's quite common for the new teeth to come in behind where the baby one was. It should correct itself as it erupts further and her tongue pushes it forward. The space (which currently seems too small) is very likely to open up as she grows. She has a lot of growing to do, and aged 10-12 she will gain more space as she loses her baby molars, which are much bigger than the adult premolars that replace them. However, her developing dentition needs monitoring to make sure it is progressing normally and any anomalies can be picked up and managed. Her normal 6- monthly check up is the perfect time to do this.

Thank you sprinkles, you have saved me from a paranoid mum moment. I don't get them often, but my husbands 'get her to the dentist now, she needs braces' panic pushed me into panic mode! I shall return to my wine.
