Preschool have mentioned my Ds age 3.6 has fragmented speech. Said they do not always understand him.
As a family we d understand him, but do realise that we are used to his speech so may not have noticed anything being wrong.
They have suggested seeing a speech therapist if no improvement in the New Year.
Any one know how we can help.? Speak slowly, encourage him to talk about things?

There are some good books about, 'it takes two to talk's is often recommended here.

I think it would be important to have him assessed.

OK a few things I have learned through speech therapy for DS2:

  • Speak slowly in short sentences, and repeat the key words
  • don't tell your DS the mystakes he makes, but repeat the correct way of sayiing it
  • encourage speech with lots of games, we like board games like snakes and ladders, one-to-one. it encourages good counting and lots of talking
  • Try if you can to spend 10-15 minutes a day completely one - to - one playing with him, no tv or radio on, no mobile phone, and comment on his play and listen to what he is saying. Let him be the boss basically!

Try to make notes of the sounds he doesn't say properly and mention it to the speech therapist. I hope this helps!
