Potty training help needed!!

My 2.5 year old DD should be ready for potty training.

She went thru a stage a few months ago where she was fascinated by all things toilet but as I had just given birth to her little brother we thought it was best to wait.

So we tried to start it last week. She refuses to sit on any of the potties and when I put her in just knickers she clearly understood not to wee in them as she held it for 3 hours before begging for a nappy and having a tantrum when she wet her pants after I said no to nappy and she refused to sit on potty or toilet.

I wonder if I missed the opportunity a few months back and how do I get her on the blasted potty?? I have tried rewards but no luck at all.

Help.

did you try the kiddie-seat, that goes over a regular potty?! sometimes, its terrifying, for kids, to contemplate sitting on a big toilet, balancing whilst attempting the task at hand! Also, point out to her that everyone needs a potty, and she's amazing cos she's on the grown-ups' potty!! I always hated the little throne kinda potties that you just leave around the house, hoping that the kid'll just saunter over to it, hitch down their pants and DO it! Yeah, right!! Its more hygenic to actually point them in the direction of a grown-up's loo!!
don't worry, she'll get round to the idea! As a rule, once she's had about an hour after her first drink around breakfast (presuming that u don't put on a nappy when you change her out of her night pants), ask her if she'd like a wee... kids usually get the hang of it on their own terms, so just hang in there!

I dont think that putting her in pants when she wont sit on a potty is a particularly good idea. If she doesnt want to go on the potty or go in her pants that is a recipe to upset her and make her anxious about going.

I think that before putting them in pants they have to be happy to both poo and pee on the toilet/ potty. The process of training then teaches them if they forget they get wet. If they are not happy to use potty there is nowhere to go IFYSWIM?

Does she have toilet trained friends (preferably a few months older?). My daughter potty trained at about her age having spent the weekend trying to fit in with a 3 year old (who clearly disapproved of dd's nappies!) Prior to then she just used it for toiletting her toys!!!

we kept trying to toilet train when DD wasn't quite ready and kept giving up. When she was ready at about 3 she was instantly dry with maybe one accident in the first week.

Does she see you on the toilet? Can you get her to sit on it with the seat down, just to start her off..

Have you seen the 'smart reward potty'? It talks to them, senses if they've done something, got a pretend flush and stickers... its a 'little people's toilet'.

I started with bare bums, rather than straight into pants/knickers..

Bribery normally works a treat.. we bought a new toy that they could play with whilst on the toilet/potty..

Thank you all!! Sorry about late reply. We all now have the d&v bug.

I have tried bribery. I bought lots of sparkly little girls bracelets in m&s which were meant to be a reward for sitting on the potty/loo. However she refused the potty and whined for a bracelet for a bit. Then when I asked if she wanted to sit on the potty and get a bracelet, she just says no thank you.

She sees me on the loo. As I said she was very very interested in "pee poo" and what mummy was doing on the loo about a month after DS was born (so 2.1). But I was worried that with DS arrival it was too soon to try.

Hence I wonder whether I missed the golden opportunity?

I have a seat which goes over the toilet to convert it but she won't go anywhere near it either.

I am going to look up one of those talking loo seat things and cross my fingers for success.

Thanks for all of your advice. Smile
