HI there,

THis is a bit of an unusual thread, I have a 5 yr old and have been through this myself but I work with children and am currnetly looking after one who is potty training but is having up to 10 accidents a day.

HAve done the usual things, sticker charts, pasta in the jar etc but was after some more advice on how to help this child.

Are the accidents in all environments/with all carers? How long have they been going on for? Boy or girl?

My DD potty trained in August very quickly, but sometime in October she had a week when she "lost" it. It coincided with her brother's birthday..... I didn't really do anything other than sit it out. She's just turned 3 now too (Novemeber).

It was very frustrating but it passed as quickly as it happened- I don't think she had a UTI or anything like that and managed not to have accidents at pre-school- seemed to be saved for me!

So......could it be a blip? Has he/she been consistently dry yet?

depends on how long it took to potty train and maybe how it was done. if the child was very reliant on an adult telling them when to go then that might be the problem.

my 3 1/2yr old potty trained about a year ago and had a lot of accidents in the first few months. he went through phases so when i thought he was sorted he started having them again. he's had one tiny accident in the last 3-6months i think. maybe it's just too soon and the child will grow out of it. mine would have accidents if he was really involved in a toy/game and just left it till the last minute so i went back to reminding him if he hadn't been for a while.

They have always had some accidents just not as many as now.

Maybe it is just a blip I need to work through with them.

I had heard that they do sometimes regress for a while, a while after they have been dry - might it be that? my dd is younger but 6 weeks after starting, still has accidents a couple of times a week, usually when she is busy at nursery. she hasnt had an accident at home for about 3 weeks, maybe becasue she can get to the potty herself and has more attention as it is only her and her big sister at home.

How is s/he at asking?

Yes, hopefully blip.

With my daughter, I wondered if maybe she'd got it so quickly but it hadn't become completely unconscious/automatic so when she then went through a development spurt (which I think she did at this time too)/was ill (she had a bad cold)/wanted Mummy's attention (unknown if she was doing this!!!)... it all fell apart.

It really was bad for 4/5 days, perhaps even over two weeks- we went through all her trousers, which we hadn't done even on day 1/2/3 of potty training!!! Then it was gone and she was fine again- the odd tiny leak for a while, but they seem to have gone now too Grin.
