Does your toddler have 'people knowledge'?

For want of a better word... My dd is 22 months and has known a close friend of the family all her life. She is quite chatty and quite capable to say his name but will only ever refer to him as 'the man'. I think she has a point... Xmas Grin. I wish I could address people by what I think of them... Envy

my DS is 25m and doesn't say people's names yet, though he gets excited and seems to recognise people and just this week I realised that he did 'know' some names as I said so-and-so is coming and he shrieked with excitment and ran to the front door which surprised me. I know other kids of this age who do say names/respond to peoples names, also 'the man' or 'the lady' :)

She's pretty good with names which is why I think it is funny for her to single him out to be just 'the man' Xmas Wink

23 m.o. DS often refers to people as 'man' or 'lady' although not so much people he knows.

He is much more keen to use some people's names than others though e.g. will speak about my SIL much more than about my brother, even though both has equally little contact with him. And he talks much more about his baby cousin than his toddler one, even though he's seen the toddler one much more. I've no idea why. Xmas Confused

My embarassment is that DS points at people and says 'black man!' if they're e.g. wearing a black coat. I have to repeat every word after him which makes it more obvious to other people what we're saying.

My DD is three and a half and began preschool in September. She calls some of the workers at her nursery "The glasses one" "The lady with the white hair" and "Barb" only Barb gets a name because she's apparently WONDERFUL. Eveyone else is merely their known by most outstanding feature. Grin

Poor Barb. She has been told that she has to sleep in preschool so that she can never get lost. DD is worried she might get confused one day and not turn up!

My DS 2.5 is generally really good with names but always refers to strangers as 'man' or 'lady', so it must be pretty normal. He also has a habit of saying 'what's that?', instead of 'who's that?' when he wants to know someone's name, which can be a little awkward! And Angelsfrom, we also have the same 'colour' problem!

DS calls his preschool workers by their names, but collectively their known as 'The Tinas', I think because his first keyworker was called Tina.

DS (19 months) does this with certain people - generally men - it doesn't bear any relation to how well he knows the person - his godparents fore xample he always sees together and he refers to his godmother by name but always calls his godfather the man. I do know children who call every man they know daddy which I think is more embarrassing

teens my DD2 was 4 before she twigged that DawnandAllan was two people; it then took about 3 months of patient explaining before she stopped asking which was which :)

BabyGiraffes · 09/12/2011 10:38

My dd1 had problems determining gender at one point when she was nearly 3. For some reason she took some convincing that grandpa was not a girl Grin. He thought it was hilarious.
