Which sling for an 18 pounder?!

My back's killing me after today's jaunt round sainsbury's! Not sure if this is the right place to post but was hoping for some sling recommendations for a larger baby. Ds is 7 months at the weekend and weighed 18lb 4 oz last Monday. We had a closer wrap when he was a wee one and loved it but he's too wriggly for that now.
Thanks everyone!

Ergo. Love mine. 7 month old DS was 20lbs when last weighed a few weeks ago. I am only 5ft 2 and slight, and can literally carry him for hours in the Ergo (and do on more days than not) and I hardly feel it. I have an older DS as well, and with the 2 of them have been through many, many slings and carriers. This is by far the best I have found.

Another vote for Ergo - I could carry daughter for ages and ages.

Sixyearoldwoes · 05/12/2011 18:19

Guessing that the closer wrap is stretchy and similar to the closer? Just because I an using Kari me for my similar sized baby and finding it very comfy. No strain to back at all-hardly know she's there.

cockle84 · 05/12/2011 18:27

Wilkinet, brilliant, can carry forwards, facing in or out, on your hip or on your back.

sedgieloo · 05/12/2011 20:57

You want the fantastic baby bjorn comfort carrier, I'm quite sure it goes up to 31lbs not that you would want to use it for long. Its been my best baby buy, the weight is taken by your hips rather than shoulders, its really easy to take baby in and out too. I could not recommend it enough

usingapseudonym · 05/12/2011 21:09

Hmmm I'm not sure about baby bjorn personally. Lots of people in the "sling community" don't really like the way it carries a baby and I don't know many people that have managed it past a few months (although you do hear of people that have!)

MamaMaiasaura · 05/12/2011 21:11

Was about to suggest closer wrap but see you've got one. Thought it lasted them a long time. Dd only 6 weeks but a little chubby one and 12lb7

4madboys · 05/12/2011 21:22

i would say a moby wrap, a wilkinet or an ergo :) my boys were all huge and i carried them in those slings. my dd is 24lb and i use the ergo, the wilkinet or a mai tai to carry her :)

parsleysandwich · 05/12/2011 21:22

And another vote for the Ergo. My 5 month old is around 18 pounds at the moment and it works very well - I'm expecting it to still be comfy when he's lots heavier.

PelvicFloorOfHighTensileTinsel · 05/12/2011 21:26

I went from kari-me to patapum when DS got too heavy. I love my patapum and I'm unlikely to get anything else now but, if you can, try to find a sling meet where you'll be able to try out a range of carriers. Everyone tends to have their own favourites and it's the best way to try out all the recommendations to find out which suits you.

I find the patapum easier than a wrap for getting DS in quickly, woven wraps (which are better than stretchy for heavy babies) do have more versatility in the number of different carries and ties you can do but I find it easier not wrapping and knotting.

juneau · 05/12/2011 21:28

I have an Ergo too and it's fab. I used it for DS1 until he was about 18 months old and DS2 (who's around 19lbs now) is happy as a clam in it and I find it very comfy to use.

Pippinintherain · 05/12/2011 21:31

A mei tai would be good.

I still carry my nearly 3 year old in one on my back with no trouble.

writeaboutlove · 05/12/2011 21:56

I've got a Beco Gemini which is great. Really struggled to carry DS1 with the kari-me, it really strained my shoulders, but this is really comfortable with DS2 who is now 6 months and probably getting on for 20lbs. Can use it as front (facing in and out), back and side carrier, and it comes in some lovely prints/colours. Have had loads of nice comments about it when out and about. Was expensive to buy new, about £90, but worth it I think and has good resale value on ebay. I have also heard good things about the Ergo but haven't tried it

RillaBlythe · 06/12/2011 21:04

Ergo. I can still carry my 3.5 year old on my back without problems - she's 18kg now. Started using it when she was 4 months, well worth the money.

AngelsfromtherealmsofgloryDog · 06/12/2011 23:23

Ergo, Manduca (has a higher weight limit than the Ergo), Connecta or mei tai.

I had to stop using the Ergo when DS was about 17 m.o. as it didn't come high enough up his body to keep him safely in.

We switched to a toddler Patapum which has suited us well. Definitely try out some at a sling meet, or hire before you buy, as different slings suit different people.

DS grew out of the Close carrier at about 5 months.

frumperina · 06/12/2011 23:30

Baby Hawk Oh Snap. Super comfy. Still wearing DD at 14 months on my front. I got mine from sasaslings.

I've always carried my little boy in a slingling pouch sling, since he was a baby he always liked looking around and being nosey behind me, so I found a pouch sling suited him better than a front carrier. (I used mainly a Babyhawk for my daughter). He's now 3.5 and I still carry him in it occassionally.

Speckledy · 07/12/2011 21:10

I've tried a variety of slings out via our local Sling Meet but have settled on a Manduca for my 22(ish)lb 8 month old boy. I borrowed one for a month and bought my own a couple of weeks ago and it's brilliant and very adjustable so should be usable from very early on if I ever have another baby which made the expense a bit easier to justify.
