15 months not walking yet

my DS is 15 months and can charge up and down with his walker, furniture walks and can climb up the stairs but shows no interest in walking. I know he is still within developmental milestones, nbut l feel as if everyone l talk to has a younger child already walking, running, etc....
Paranoia??? Any thoughts?

Totally normal in my experience. Plenty of friends have children who didnt start even thinking of walking until that age. DS was 9 months (sorry not much help!) and some friends with babies of same age were worried when they saw DS but it is honestly fine as long as they are weight bearing by that age (which your DS is).

One bit of advise - get rid of the walker. Might force him to give it a go himself :)

what kind of walker is it? is it one of those sit in one, or a push-along?

does he crawl very fast/roll to get where he wants?

One of my mates DCS rolled over and over to get where he wanted, much faster than tottery boring ole walking; this went on til he was about 18 months

SucksToBeMe · 04/12/2011 21:51

My DS was TWO (!!!) before he walked! I went out of my mind with worry, I took him to a consultant who manipulated all his joints looking for any problems, and I swear to god he was walking within days!!!
I think that doctor must've done something, don't know what but it worked!

HelloShitty · 04/12/2011 21:52

My DS didn't walk until 17 months, although all his little friends seemed to be on their feet before their 1st birthdays. I felt rotten about it, but he got there and now his absolute favourite thing is RUNNING MUMMY, RUNNING!
(He never had a walker, btw)

danthemansmum · 04/12/2011 21:52

its a push along walker. he can crawl very quickly, very confident and pulls himself up no bother. we try to get him to "walk between" my DH and l but he just laughs and sits down.
A lot of folk have said get rid of walker....

My daughter was 16.5 months before she walked. She was walking holding our hands all the time and walking quite far but wouldn't let go. Everyone else's babies seemed to walk at around 1 except for mine! She didn't talk until 18 months either - just took her time. She is now just 2 and the same as all the others. If he is cruising around and climbing stairs it sounds like he just prefers it. Ours was super fast at crawling and looked like an overgrown baby Grin. In the end we did try and encourage her to walk between us/short distances etc and the next day she just walked across the room - on holiday.

Traceymac2 · 04/12/2011 21:57

The norm is up to 18 months so plenty of time! My dd1 was 15 months and dd2 was 13. If he's cruising (what a term!) then it wont be too long. I was more concerned about this kind of thing with my first, with my second I was more relaxed about everything, i know that they will all get there in their own time. You don't see many adults who can't walk so try not to worry!

danthemansmum · 04/12/2011 21:58

that makes me feel much better, thank you! I really dont like the "baby centre" development emails..... they breed paranoia!

Enjoy the time you have left because once he can really move he will be up to all sorts of mischief! I literally need 5 pairs of eyes for my 19 month old!

MinnieBar · 04/12/2011 22:08

Honestly don't worry about it; he'll do it when he's good and ready. DS: 16mths, DD1: 16mths, DD2: 17mths.
I can totally sympathise on other people's children walking/talking earlier (not to mention having to carry them a lot more when they're not yet walking!), but really, try not to dwell on it.

The best advice I was given: When your DS and his peers are (say) 2, 2.5, no one will be able to point out which ones were the early walkers and which were the later ones.

tethersjinglebellend · 04/12/2011 22:18

DD was 20 months before she could walk. We were frantic with worry and she just stood up and walked one day.

I know exactly how hard it is when everyone else's children seem to be walking, and other parents give you concerned and sympathetic glances and the words "They'll do it in their own time" make you want to do damage, but try and remember that other parents, on the whole, only know their own children and are not the experts Wink

alana39 · 04/12/2011 22:22

Mine walked at 14, 20 and 22 months. DS3 is just 2 and still wobbly but no apparent problems.

Both the late walkers were tall, very fast crawlers who had cruised around furniture from just after 12 months.

Try not to worry, I am very laid back about it but sometimes wonder how I would have felt if it had been DS1 approaching 2 without walking.

Currently the norm is to wait til 2 before referring unless the parents are concerned, I think.

Woodlands · 04/12/2011 22:50

Sounds like my DS - last month aged 15 months he was pushing his walker around and going up and down stairs etc, but still crawling to get around. Now at 16.5 months he is probably walking 60% of the time and crawling 40% of the time, with the percentages shifting towards walking all the time. It still feels so odd to see him wobbling along on two feet when I've been so used to seeing him crawling at a million miles an hour!

Listzilla · 05/12/2011 11:56

My DD is 17.5 months and only started walking last weekend. To be honest, worrying as it was, I'm sort of glad - I think it was easier for us this way Blush

Don't worry, one day he'll just up and do it and you'll forget he ever wasn't!

PeppaPigHostage · 05/12/2011 14:01

My eldest didn't walk until she was nearly 2, which I have since found out is the norm for all the babies in my DH's family.

I was very worried about my PFB not walking, especially because by that time there were babies 12 months younger than my DD at toddler group that were walking. I kept being asked 'so, is she walking yet?' which drove me mad.

Notinmykitchen · 05/12/2011 14:05

It sounds like your DS can walk, he just hasn't quite got the courage to let go and do it on his own yet. As everyone else has said, he will do, when he is ready!

sockmonkey · 05/12/2011 14:25

DS1 didn't walk till he was 18 months. He was a fast crawler & could get round no problems, don't think he saw the need.
Once he did walk, it was none of the wobbly falling over stuff, just straight off. I plonked him down & he just walked off... thought I was seeing things Grin

PeppaPigHostage · 05/12/2011 15:05

Sock Yes, my DD was the same, it took her ages to walk but when she did she was very good at it straight away, very steady.

danthemansmum · 08/12/2011 17:22

Big thanks again.... its hard not to worry... but l feel much better about it now :) XXX

My dd was 16-5 to 17m, no wobbling here too, she was just off, very good walker straight away and doesn't crawl at all now 18m!!!!!!!!!!

tanfastic · 10/12/2011 20:14

My ds was 18 months before he walked, hope that helps Smile

Woodlands · 10/12/2011 22:26

yes, just an update, since I posted 6 days ago my DS is now walking 90% of the time and crawling 10% (at 16.5 months).

BoysBoysBoysAndMe · 10/12/2011 23:54

My DS1 didn't walk until 15 months - then as soon as he could walk REFUSED point blank, to get in his buggy!!

Don't worry, it will happen.
