6 MONTH OLD WANTING TO STAND ALL THE TIME

Ive just been really worried by my mother who saw my dd standing whilst holding my hands, who siad that it will make her bow-legged.
DD loves to be on her feet, even when we are sitting on the floor doing row-row the boat she tries to pull up on to her feet and do it staning. At baby groups she wants to always stand up holding on to my hands. should i be worried and not encourage this? Shes still not sitting by herslef, will hold it for a few minutes then wobbles and she hates being on her tummy. I dont want her to miss crawling as this is important isnt it? Dont want her to have bandy legs but she gets frustrated when she cant stand.

Your DM is talking out of her hat Wink

Encourage your DD to stand all you want, it WILL NOT make her legs bandy :)

My dd2 was standing very early and walked at 8 months, she has problems with her bendy legs (hypermobility) but i have never really linked it to early walking, her sister was a late walker, didn't even sit till she was 6 months and she also has hypermobile legs (so no link really).

Oh - and some babies never crawl, some go straight to walking, some do a bum-shuffle, others roll to where they want to go to instead.

As far as I am aware your mother is wrong, it's an old-fashioned view that people used to believe. My DD2 who is almost 6months also loves standing, I let her as much as she wants.

AnaisB · 04/12/2011 20:30

Don't worry about her missing crawling - what Flisspaps said. It's not considered a developmental milestone for that reason.

DD was the same at that age. She cruised at 7 mo and walked at about 11. She crawled and rolled on the same day, that was the week before she took her first solo steps. Cruising was liberating for her (&me!) I spent months worrying about her not rolling or crawling but she just wasn't that interested. She's now a running, jumping, hopping, delightful little chatterbox of a 2 year old. They usually all get there in the end, just at different ages.

My dd is five months and just the same. Now I love something to worry about as much as the next person (perhaps a bit more Blush) but this isn't it! Enjoy!

Mine was obsessed with pulling up to standing from about 5m, cruised from about 6m and wanted to walk holding hands from 8m-ish but didn't walk unaided til 12m, so don't worry too much about your breakables yet!

Her legs aren't the least bit bandy. Let your baby have her standing fun. I know a little one of about 6m who only likes lying on his back or standing up!

DD2 is the same. She started wanting to pull up to stand very early and has very strong legs - if ever she was a bit down or grumpy, letting her stand was a sure fire way of getting a smile. She 'commando crawled' from around 5 months, started cruising at around 7 months and did 'proper' crawling at 8. She's now 10 months and is able to stand unaided for a short time. She's not bandy-legged in any way!

DD1 was the same. Didn't like being on his tummy at all. He walked holding on to fingers for ages and from what seemed like an early age, but enjoyed it so much he got lazy and didn't walk properly till 14 months. My back was very grateful by this point!!!
As Atomant said They all get there just at different ages.
