fish oils again

I have been trying my twin boys aged 4.5 on fish oils recently to no avail. Ds2 did take it for a while about 2 years ago , he took eyeq in his milk but then i had to give him laxatives and the only way he would take it was in his milk so i stopped the eyeq. When I tried again he refused and since then has completely gone off milk anyway. What I have tried on both boys is - eyeq in cream and liquid form, both vanilla and citrus, boots smart stuff in liquid and haliborange in liquid, capsules and twistees. They seem to detect it instantly in both food and juice. I want to try Eskimo kids as it seems to have a high level of EPA which seems to be the thing required in slightly older children but am reluctant to get it if its got that fishy taste which I know they will detect and refuse. I noticed a change in Ds2 when he took the eyeq a couple of years ago but not sure if the changes were going to happen anyway. Both boys started school in september, are the youngest in their class and i would like to see their concentration improve somewhat. Anybody out there who had the problem I had and discovered a nuetral tasting fish oil and any thoughts on eskimo kids oil? thanks

Just off point but curious, why do people give fish oils? seems very popular.

Aloha · 07/01/2006 21:09

Because they contain nutrients that are extremely important for brain (and eye) function. And most of us are deficient in them because we don't eat enough (or any) oily fish.
There are a huge number of studies that show that these nutrients are connected with improved brain and eye development in the foetus, higher intelligence in children, improvement in children with dyspraxia and other conditions, and a massively reduced rate of depression, including PND.

I give ds the IQ one, and when he went through a phase of not liking it, bribed him with a spoonful of chocolate Nesquik powder and told him it was medicine so he didn't expect it to taste gorgeous.

thankyou

Aloha · 07/01/2006 21:10

I am sure it helps my ds. He has dyspraxia.

thanks Aloha, i had actually read some of your previous messages on this topic with interest where you talked about the benefits of the oils and I think it was you who said that older children should get more EPA. I dont post much but am a regular lurker and actually find all all your posts interesting!

xfactormum · 07/01/2006 21:54

Apparantly there is an eyeq mini which is suitable for babies and small children. i think its in capsule form which you can squirt into milk or other drinks

For ds as a baby I used Mini IQ from www.healthyandessential.com

Thanks X-factormum!

izzybiz · 08/01/2006 12:36

thanks all, will give them a try

mummysandy · 09/01/2006 13:56

The one that the eye q people make for younger children is called mumomega infancy

Carameli · 09/01/2006 18:53

my daugher now 27mths, loves salmon and tuna and we have them omega columbus eggs. Is that going to be enough for her. Or would it be a good idea to start on fish oils.
Does anyone have any good websites to read up about it a bit more. I know they are good for concentration etc but she is really well behaved most of the time(well she is 2) and has great concentration, a bit addicted to her baby einstein dvds I must admit.

would love any advice from others.

Try www.durhamtrial.org (sorry can never get the link thing right so you may want to copy & paste!)

I get mine from www.equazen.com but there is loads of information on there that's interesting even if you buy from elsewhere.

My ds, like Aloha's, has dyspraxia and IQ has really helped him. (It has also done wonders for my pmt ).

I just bought some of the Bassetts omega 3 and vitamin jellies (age 3 plus) for dd, unfortunately both she and ds say they don't like the taste and won't eat them - so if anyone wants to try them (2 missing out of a packet of 30) I'll send them to you. It's a shame to waste them!

Item on Radio 4 NOW.

You and Yours. catch it on listen again if you miss it (starts 1/2 an hour into the program).

We have the same prob as many of you - getting them to take it! My eldest is 8 and will take it but 5-yr-old will not in any shape or form - UNTIL we have tried the new St Ivel milk with added Omega 3.It hasn't got a huge amount in (250ml of milk has 14 per cent of RDI) but I'm hoping that amount is better than nothing? It really really just tastes of milk! (and no, I promise I don't work for St Ivel. . .)
