...particularly in the middle of the night - any advice for how to try and stop this?! He sleeps from 7-midnight then feeds 2 hourly until we get up at about 7, but for the last 3 nights he's been awake for 2hrs from 4am shouting at me, and won't be quiet! I've tried winding, nappy change, rocking, (quiet) singing, white noise and feeding but he just spits the boob out and starts shouting at it.

We're co-sleeping but I'm rapidly losing patience :( He's waking DP up in the spare room across the hall and I'm worried he'll wake the neighbours. I've even tried asking him to be quiet, but of course he doesn't understand.

Is it time to put him in his cot in his room? I love co-sleeping but I can't carry on with the 4am wakeups as well as broken sleep.

(he doesn't sleep well during the day and usually only on me so limited opportunity for sleeping when he sleeps)

Umm. It sounds like he's just awake for the day. My DS (now 1) has been getting up between 4 and 5 am for the last few months - I thought it might change when the clocks went back but no dice. IME early wakers are just early wakers. I just go to bed at 9.

Hmm. He does eventually go back to sleep at 6am for an hour or so, until DP comes in to say goodbye when he goes to work. I'm just hoping it's a phase and the novelty will wear off soon!

mine did this so we put him in his cot in his own room and suddenly he started waking at 6 instead of 4.45, which was great, then it gradually went to 7.30 (hes now 2) at the age you're talking about I made sure he had a good feed just before bed and he started sleeping through the night then. good luck :) try blackout blinds!

Sounds like the good old 4 month old sleep regression. My DS2 is 21 weeks and we're going through a similar thing. It will pass. You just (unfortunately) have to gey used to Breakfast TV and coffee and stinging eyes at that time in the morning.

And did you know..sleeping for 5 solid hours at our babies age is actually classed as sleeping through the night? I nearly choked on my early morning coffee when I read that!

Octaviapink · 29/11/2011 20:55

It's a common misconception... 'sleeping through' is actually shorthand for 'sleeping through a feed' not 'sleeping all the way through the night'. Hence the five-hour stretch thing.

well last night he went to sleep at 7.30, woke at 9.30 but DP managed to sing him back to sleep within 10 minutes (by singing ring of fire Grin) and he didn't want a feed until midnight. Woke up again for a feed at 4 then went back to sleep until 7.30, with no chatting - hopefully tonight will be the same!

Ah bless his singing! Wink

I'm still with the 5am brigade Sad

Never mind! He's asleep now and I've just had tea and hot croissants! mmm Grin
