crawling 12 month old DS doesn't seem to like standing anymore - hypermobility or normal phase?

DS started crawling a few weeks ago. I suspect he might be slightly hypermobile in his hips (just how he appears, and I was diagnosed with hypermobility after I had him), and at a recent paed consult (for something entirely different) she said possibly, but too young to tell.

But I have noticed then when I hold him on his legs - he's been weight bearing for ages - he seems to want to pull back down to sitting.

He can't pull himself up yet, but he does try, using a pair of steps or the sofa.

He doesn't cry or seem in pain, but is this normal? Could he just be enjoying crawling and this new phase? Or is it a sign that maybe he's struggling to stand? How would I know?

My DS has hypermobility in his ankles. He's been pulling up/cruising since he was 11mths but whenever we picked him up to a stand he would draw his legs up underneath him so he had to be put down on his knees. He did this up until about 17mths (i.e. would only stand up on his own terms against a sturdy piece of furniture). Unfortunately he still isn't walking unaided now at 22mths but he will walk around holding our hands etc so he's making the progress that all other babies do, just on a much longer timescale. I think for my DS the hypermobility is causing a stability issue rather than affecting his strength IYKWIM. I also have mild hypermobility and there's definately a genetic link so if you have it and you're noticing a few issues then it might be the most likely explanation for your DS.

How old is he? Is he crawling late? If you think the problem is in his hip then I imagine it would cause a delay in crawling because of the way he has to move his legs. If there's been no delay then it might just be that he's enjoying crawling so doesn't want to stand up, or maybe just wants to pull up himself on his own just now while he's trying to master it, rather than have you hold on to him. If you are worried I would have him checked out though cos the NHS can take a while to get things moving if they think there's a problem (my DS has seen a specialist once [at 16mths] who wanted to wait and see if it corrected itself, we're awaiting his second appointment now).

Oh, and it doesn't seem to cause DS any pain at all, I think he just gets tired quickly cos his ankles are in the wrong position so aren't supported properly.

Sounds like he's just enjoying his new found mobility and the crawling is good and will help strengthen joints if he is hypermobile.

My DD is very hypermobile in almost every joint and it does affect her mobility (she also has low tone to add to the difficulty). Like WeeLors LO, it made DD unstable and although she did weight bear from 11 months, she couldn't stand unaided until after she could actually walk (weird!).

Agree that there would be no harm in seeking opinion of HV or GP just in case physio would be helpful in getting him moving. It did wonders for my DD Smile

hi both

He's been crawling since he was about 10 months(ish). He was slower than his peers, but I'm not sure if that's slow or not? Is that a delay? The paed thought he had good muscle tone in his legs and wasn't worried about them - I pointed out the clickiness of his ankles, but again she wasn't worried. She suggested perhaps the hips, but in a very I-am-not-too-worried sort of way.

well, if he can't move on his feet yet, he's bound to prefer being on his knees - much faster and more interesting/ fun all round, which makes it difficult to tell. Grin

i would just watch, and wait. it's too early to tell at the moment. if he isn't walking by 16mos and you still have concerns, then go back and get his muscle tone and joints checked again. you can keep encouraging him to weight bear (it also helps the hip socket development) in the meantime. i don't think there is a big enough delay or concern for a physio referral at the mo.

I wouldn't say 10 months is a delay in crawling at all (DD didn't move at all until she was 15 months old!). Sounds like if he is hypermobile it isn't going to be a huge problem especially if his muscle tone is fine!

x posted with madwoman - totally agree with her Smile

I would wait, especially if he is a proficient crawler. DS2 is hypermobile - he didnt crawl, he bum shuffed instead at 11m. He didnt pull to stand at all until he was in piedro orthotic boots at 17m as he couldnt stand at all until then.

At 12m your DS is well within the milestones still, and pulling to stand - he has just realised he is quicker crawling!

Thanks all

Yes, his childcarer says that she thinks he wants to be 'down' because he's worked out he can get around that way - the moment he sits down, he's swivelling and moving...

Not worried yet, just curious for feedback
