2.5 year old can't use scissors

My ds2 (2.5 year old) has a mild speech delay. No words until 2, then unclear sentences practically overnight. His speech is very muffled. He cannot use scissors. I have spent the last hour trying to cut with him, but he has not got a clue. Is this normal? My three year old just picked up scissors and started cutting things (supervised!) at 2. ds2 was given a toy at Christmas that required a certain hand movement (a grabber/pincer toy) and he has no idea how to use it. Is this a sign of poor fine motor skills, or is he still too young for me to be worrying about this?
After an hour with scissors he still has no idea how to hold, or which way to point the scissors- I have to be careful not to get frustrated with him....

maybe he's left handed!

I've never even tried with my DD and she's only 2 months younger - I would have thought he was still way too young to be worried

my dd is in nursery of 2.5 to 3.5 and only one or two of the older kids can use scissors
my dd 3.3 yrs also has speech delay and no way is she anywhere near using scissors althoug she knows how to carry them safely

My ds3 is nearly three and can't hold or use scissors properly. Is this really a concern? It doesn't bother me, especially as it means that if he does get hold of a pair by mistake, he can only do minimal damage with them before I discover him.

I can't remember when my other children could use scissors, but I know dd's skill with them was praised when she went to playgroup which she didn't do until she was 3, so i don't think being able to use them at 2.5 is very common. HTH.

My bright, advanced ds couldn't use scissors at 2.5 either. It is actually quite a complex thing, and ds was never good with plastic childrens scissors. As soon as he got the co-ordination right, I bought him round-ended metal ones.

DD is 2.1 and hasn't a clue with scissors either - I'm not worried, but it probably helps that I've no sibs to compare her to. Nor any other specific concerns. But I don't think not being able to use scissors at 2 is a sign of delayed fine motor skills, or at least not much.

Think you are worrying way too young. ds has always struggled with scissors and does even now at 7 but has some motor skill issues. Similarly the pincer and manipulation actions but none of this worried me at 2 1/2 ! dd is left handed and could manage scissors until she went to school, regressed for a while, but is now excellent with them at 4.

I thik this is another classic where I am comparing my first two sons (shouldn't do, but I do) ds1 walked at 10 months, ds2 at 16 months. ds1 talked at 14 months, ds2 first words at 2.... etc. etc.Unfortunately someone mentioned dyspraxia to me at Christmas and it got me worrying..... again....

ds has symptoms of dyspraxia but no way could I have been definitive about it at that age.

Far to young to be able to use Scissors! Wouldn't worry

WigWamBam · 05/01/2006 20:40

My dd didn't have a clue with scissors until she was over 3, and even then could only snip the edges of paper. Plenty of time to learn to use them; not worth getting frustrated with him over, IMO.

tassis · 05/01/2006 20:45

Ds will be 3 in april and it hadn't occured to me to see if he could use scissors or not...

rummum · 05/01/2006 20:56

I work in a pre-school... most of the 2.6 year olds can't use them yet... a lot of children haven't established a dominant hand at this age as well..
I often have the children sitting between my legs (?) and I help them snip when they are first learning.
