8mo body weaving movements when sitting in his chair- normal??

My Ds has recently started to do this, especially when he is sitting in his high chair. He will weave from side the side (a bit like how an elephant will weave his head) for a few seconds. It seems to be something that he is doing voluntarily, and if he is busy with a toy / distracted, he doesn't seem to do it.

We've just moved area and I haven't had a chance to register with a GP yet, but will do that as a priority this week, in the meantime, would appreciate it if anyone who has had experience of this can advice!

sounds like he's working on his core stability/manipulation to me...
but maybe someone else will be along with some other ideas
it doesn't sound too concerning to me tho unless his eyes are rolling back into his head (does it look like he's having a seizure?) (but I'd guess not if you think it seems voluntary

I don't think it's a seizure- I think it's voluntary because today he saw my DH imitate his weaving movement, and he did it too. I did wonder if it was something involuntary and a muscle tic/ movement that he couldn't control, and will be taking him to the GP this week.

Completely forgot that my DS used to do this too, about the same age. It was quite weird. I think he'd just figured out he could do it, and found it entertaining. If you're concerned though, take him to the GP once registered and they can make sure all okay, put your mind at rest.

How is his sitting when unsupported - does it stop him sitting up? I think he's just trying it out and maybe likes the feel of it! My dd has some involuntary movements and they don't present like that.

survivingsummer how does your DDs involuntary movements present?

My DS can sit fine and is crawling etc. This weaving movement that he does uually only happens when he is in his chair (and once when he was extremely tired and in my arms), not even when he is sitting on the ground. This makes me think it is something voluntary, (and the fact that he will reproduce it if he sees my DH doing it). My suspicion is that he is doing it because he is bored of sitting in his chair and it is something to entertain himself...but of course my fear is that it is involuntary (hence the GP visit). Would really appreciate hearing about your experience!

My now 7.5 month old dd has been doing this for a month or two now. I was worried at first but I think she's doing it because 1) the first time she did it me and dp laughed at her and copied 2) it amuses her and 3) she is looking at things from different angles. That's what I think anyway??? Occasionally now when she sits at her high chair she leans right over to one side to look at me and then smiles, I think she finds it funny to see me from a different angle.

If I can reassure a little....My 20 month DS has always sent himself to sleep in high chair/car seat by weaving from side to side whilst making sleepy sounds. Also when he's in cot at night you can hear him making the sounds and by the creaking of the cot; sounds like he's 'rocking himself'. When I read your DS had done it when he was extremely tired & in your arms; made me think of my DS. Hope that helps...

My DD used to do this, I think she just found it entertaining. She also went through a stage of shaking her head all the time and has now moved onto nodding her head instead. I think when they find a new thing they can do they just like to repeat it because they can.

Moominsarescary · 24/11/2011 06:49

My ds is also 8 months and does this, he has also started making his nose twitch like a rabbit, that gave me abit if a shock, thought it was some kind of tic until I realised he was sucking the inside of his top lip causing his nose to twitch.

Thanks for all the reassuring messages- It looks like its just something new he's discovered and it's entertaining to view things in different angles! GP not worried. Smile
