5 months old and stopped rolling over

DS started rolling from back to tummy at 13 weeks. Over the last month or so, he has stopped doing it at all. I keep trying to encourage him with toys etc but he refuses. He hates tummy time and cries when I put him on his belly. I'm worried he won't learn to crawl as he spends such little time on his front. Is this normal for babies to learn a skill, then stop doing it?

13 weeks is very early to learn to roll. Has he put on a lot of weight since then? Maybe this is making it harder for him to roll?

yes, often they stop doing something when they learn something new. like stopping rolling over all the time but creeping instead.
is he getting teeth? that can be distracting and painfull as well.
if you are in any way worried, have a chat with your hv about it.

He is a fatty big boy. Yes it was early. He then did it constantly for a few weeks, then every now and again and now nothing. But he has just cut his first tooth so maybe that's the reason. He also tries to sit up all the time when on his back - he does what look like big stomach crunches. He doesn't get anywhere though.

mousymouse is probably right - he is so interested in learning to sit, he is no longer interested on rolling.

My Ds was the same at 5 months, got preoccupied with sitting and stopped wanting to roll or spend time on his tummy. Now at nearly 7 months, sitting is old news he is actively diving forward onto his tummy and is obsessed with doing mini pushups. I think as long as you keep up what you're doing and give him encouragement and opportunity he'll be fine. Incidentally, mine

Posted too soon! Mine has never mastered rolling over completely front to back,he's also quite a big baby, and this has never been seen as a problem, they all develop at different paces.

I've found that they tend to be really into something for a while, then forget all about it.

My daughter would roll like a mad thing for a week, then for the next week it wouldn't even occur to her that it was possible.

Don't worry Grin

DS2 rolled once at about 5 months then not again until 9 months ish.

He's 3 now and I can't say it has hindered his prospects in life.

He'll be fine Smile
