We got back DS's Sunderland urine test results today and they came back positive!
I feel a bit sad but also really happy to know that the gluten thing wasn't all in my head. Also so pleased we stopped it when we did.

We didn't actually go staight to the ARU at SU. We had it done through Breakspear Hospital (private hosp. in Herts that we'd booked for his single measles jab) However, they still called it the Sunderland test and sent the sample off to SU. I think the results measured peptides? Or something like that. We're going in next week for a consultation to explain where to go from here.

He indicated that we may only need to stay off the gluten til DS is 2.5 and his gut matures a little but we don't know yet.

Anyway, point of the thread is to say a huge thank you firstly to you Baka for your empathy over the gluten 'highs' and your info about the Sunderland test and to you, Ruty for your experience of the test and of your DS's gut problems. This helped me tie things together.

Oh and apparently we don't have a problem with milk as this was also tested. Not sure if this is unusual to be intolerant of just the gluten but it's good to know as he loves milk and yoghurt.

Thank you both again.

P.S Why isn't this info available from G.Ps?

Glad you did it- makes a big difference getting in early! (not practicing what I preach as ds3's sample tube is still sitting in the kitchen and I'm pondering how to collect it).

DS1 is fine with milk, just problems with gluten, msg, aspartame and peanuts (!- weird that one never heard of anyone else with that- but too much=headbanging loony).

They didn't mention anything about aspartame or other artif. sweet. but I know he was also loopy with ibuprofen so we're staying away from them anyway.
MIL is sticking to her guns that it's all nonsense so we're a bit worried she'll stuff him with weetabix and sandwiches when he's there just to prove us wrong. But that's another story.

We just took the nappy off when he woke at 5.30 and chased him around with the pot til he stood still with that look of concentration!

That's what we did with ds1. Ds3 is just into everything he's a nightmare.

Ibuprofen - gave that to ds1 once- NEVER again (I think it's the aspartame or saccharine it contains- can't remember which).

only just seen this homemama but so glad you know at least. Best to know as early as possible. My ds is coming on in leaps and bounds since we stopped gluten and dairy - good that your ds doesn't have a problem with dairy - that's a relief. Don't let that MIL near him with weetabix!

ruty · 05/01/2006 23:35

oh and BTW my ds's consultant gastroenterologist kept saying we should introduce weetabix, and the only contraindication for gluten was if you were a coeliac - until we got a second opinion for someone much more experienced in the field - that shut him up!

weetabix???? eek!
