My son loved anything with wheels. He had a smarttrike for his birthday. Wheelybugs are good as well. Smaller stuff that worked was a shapesorter car thing and wooden blocks.

I've found anything from the ELC Happyland range to be excellent. We got some for DD1s 1st birthday and at 2.5 she still plays with it daily and now my 1yr old plays with it too.

Mine also got a magnadoodle at 1 year too, again its had lots of play. At first just scribbles, but now my older one is starting to draw shapes and letters and faces. Its such a simple toy which sort of grows with them.

A toy microphone is popular here too, now that DD2 is starting to talk she likes shouting into it.

Megablocks are good too, as are sticklebricks and Brio style trainsets.

My great nephew will be one in a couple of weeks. He loves things with wheels and anything that makes a noise. All the toys are half price at Mother care at the moment. Also there is an extra 20 Percent off on some toys. So far we have been able to get the cube shape sorter for £4. A push and go animal fir £4 and the camper van transporter thing for £4.80. All these toys were over £10 each on the original price. There is also a Hammer bench and a baby guitar thing that my niece ( his Mum ) has asked for.

those (are they called hammer benches?) things that have 4 balls in and a little hammer to bash them in, my DS loved at 1 and now he likes to try and put the balls back in the right colour co-ordinated holes and he is now 2 so that toy has gone all year! they're cheap too, i think £8 in asda. mine also love megablocks and building blocks, books, and cars. those ring stacker toys are good at that age too as a learning toy. :)
