Am I the only one with a 5yr old (yr1) DS who could take or leave Lego ?

he is always given Lego at Xmas and birthdays but has never ever been interested. I've tried starting something with him to get him going with it but he soon gives up. I thought his teacher might say on parents evening that he was a bit of a fidget /lack of concentration but it was completely the opposite. Even if friends come and they seem interested he won't really play.....

My 5 yo is the same although he does have concentration issues. We have loads of Lego and would love to sit and build with him but he's just not interested. Tbh though he doesn't really do toys, he always asks for certain things and is mad about Ben 10 so has all associated figures and toys but he doesn't bother and just wants them for the sake of having them!

my now 8yo DS1 is like this - I have built more lego than he has! He has poor gross motor skills (writing is terrible!). They have a group in school now to improve motor skills and it includes getting them to build lego! He did always seem to find it hard to manipulate, you have to press quite hard to get it together properly and for some reason that seemed to hard for him or at any rate he wasn't interested in persevering. I have some quite expensive unopened lego presents in the attic - Harry Potter, Star Wars - I am keeping them in the hope that DS2 , nearly 2yo, might appreciate them more. Other things I have regifted!

None of my sisters 3 children seem to like lego (ages 6,5 and 3). 2 of the 3 are a bit more hyper than the other 1 but are all the same in terms of lego. One is very creative and sits for hours just painting / making things with playdoh / drawing etc, so you'd have thought she'd like it at least but no....

My DS at 2 doesn't like blocks... I'm guessing he may be the same with lego. But we shall see :)

I think 5 is a little bit young for lego. My two older boys were about 8 or 9 before they really got into it. The same with my nephew who, at 12, still loves lego. Ds3 (5) has no interest in it atm.

I teach Y1, none of my children are interested in Lego, they LOVE Duplo though, I think Lego is too fiddly for 5 year olds and Duplo gives more immediate results. Maybe buy him some Duplo?

stickytoffee · 21/11/2011 13:37

Thanks for that - glad to see I'm not the only one. DS says he plays with Duplo at the childminder after school....I looked on ebay last night as I think DD who is a little bit smaller has started to play with it too. Maybe it's something they might even be able to do together (she says wistfully thinking they might stop scrapping and start playing !)

I meant that DD plays with it at nursery (I really would know if we had it in the house and she played with it there in case you all thought that was an odd comment !!)
