4 month old sticking out tongue - why?

Hi, my DS has just started sticking his tongue right out and making "smacking/chewing" type noises particularly around feeding time. I've just started giving him a small amount of solids in the morning because he started waking up in the night and was always hungry. Is he trying to tell me he wants solid food when he does this or is it just a coincidence that he's started doing this now. I wish he could tell me ! Anyone got any ideas? Also, does anyone know of any good books that explain what different body language in a baby means? thanks.

I expect he's just doing it because he's discovered he can- and its an interesting sensation. next week it'll be something else. Babies don't try to tell you much with hidden meaning because they don't know that don't know what they are thinking, or even that they can influence your behaviour on purpose (that starts to develop around a year old).

agree he does it because he can , wait until he can raspberry and squeal ! As to whether he needs soldis - the jury would still be out - just sounds like typical instinctive behaviour for his age including the waking, "hunger" spurt and exploring with his mouth and tongue as opposed to any deliberate motivation.

He already has the ear piercing squeal. I don't think I worded my message very well, I thought it might be a reflex thing like rooting for the nipple when he's hungry, not that he was thinking, "aha if I stick my tongue out she'll get out the steak and chips" although I guess anything is possible ! re. the solids thing, I did agonise over whether it was too early but the health visitor said give it a go !

LOL at 'steak and chips'. That tickled me.
