Hell-ish Nappy Changes

Hi there,

Wondering if any of you lovely people had any advice to help me cope with the above. My DD (14 mnths - not walking yet) has recently decided that she does not need to lay down to have her nappy changed, especially when it is full of poo. This leads to lots of tears and screaming and me trying to stop her making little poo 'bum shapes' all over the floor.

I've tried giving her stuff to distract her with (my mobile which she would usually die to get hold of) and I've tried singing to distract her (it being so bad that it would, frankly, distract anyone from getting on with anything), but all to no avail. I try to stop her from moving physically, but am scared that the amount of force I'd have to use would hurt her.

Any words of wisdom?

Im having the exact same problem with my 15 month old dd I have no words of wisdom for you but I'm hoping someone will be along soon who can help.

Pull ups? Might work unless she is v small. I just made mine lie down, gave them toy to hold, sit by their side then swing one leg over their stomach (restricting but not squashing) and leaving two hands free to change them.

I have a good friend who used to sort of swaddle her babies' arms so they couldn't push themselves back up again. She had twins so couldn't be arsed with any negotiations / faffing around, get them changed quick before the other one escapes down stairs / up chimney / out of window.

aye use pull ups where you can and pin her down to change a poo. We have a changing table still for DS2 who is 21 months, so it's upper arms across his body and change as soon as is practicable

Can she stand resting her arms on sturdy toybox or low table? Ds tolerates nappy changes a bit more this way. It is harder to clean up poo bottoms but I'd rather that than screaming and poo smears as he crawls off.

Its taken me a while to perfect this with reusable nappies - much easier with disposables!

Special toys that only come out at nappy change time stopped working after a bit for us.

I find pull ups leak far too often though do occasionally use them when going swimming as DS hates lying on the bench. There is a changing mat with a harness on it so you can literally strap them down. Its available through Amazon and called the Rabbitt (no, not that type of rabbit!). Its about £30. Haven't tried it but might be worth a shot.

Hi all,

Thanks so much for the replies! All fantastic advice. We already use pull-ups as madam can open normal nappies with gruesome results. She loves standing and I don't mind changing her that way if it's just a wet nappy. Obviously the poo-ey ones are less easy to deal with like that. I think the next step is the pinning down / swaddling arms. Special toys / my phone are totally ignored unfortunately.

My son took to standing up nappy changes. It started with just changing a wet nappy quickly in a corner then it kinda developed into all nappies changed standing up. You have to make sure you don't miss any bits that need a wipe but we bath every night so it works for us.

He holds the wall/side of the bath and I jsut whip it off wipe and put a new one on. very occasionally he runs away!

My DD went through this for months and months it was an absolute nightmare. I went with changing her standing up and using pull ups as others have suggested, for pooey ones rip the sides and scrap as much of with the back bit off as you can give them a really good wipe, get them to laydown and blow raspberrys on belly if you can and have a quick look to make sure you got everything then stand them up and put pull ups on.

You could try doing it off of a changing mat and just on a towel as DD went through a phase of night liking her mat and of course stick the TV on.
