2 week old sick approx 5 times a day - worrying?

Not sure if I'm worrying unneccessarily here but my two week old breastfed DS is puking up what looks and feels like an awful lot of partially digested milk around five or six times a day. I'm literally changing my outfits on a bi-hourly basis and the washing machine has never had so much of a hammering.

He was 9lb at birth and he's now past his birth weight so there are no concerns about weight yet. I guess I'd just like a bit of reassurance that this is normal for a greedy boy...? Thanks.

DS was sick all the time as a baby. We ended up buying loads of value towels to cover the sofa! He was never really upset by it but it did mean doing loads of laundry. And it does make you feel rubbish that you spend all that time feeding only for him to throw it back up. But as long as he isn't in pain and is gaining weight ok, then I'd say you have nothing to worry about.

kellymom.com/babyconcerns/reflux.html It sounds like you have a happy spitter.

Sounds like reflux. My dd had it and was puking about 5-10 times a day. Does he seem like he is in pain? It would be worth going to see the doctor as there are drugs that they can give you to help. I think the first thing they try is Gaviscon. It is a huge faff though if you are breast feeding so you may decide not to bother.

My dd continued to gain weight and wasnt ever in pain with it so I decided to just accept it and deal with the extra laundry. I used to have a muslin on my shoulder At all times for about the first 5 months. She grew out of it by the age of 6 months and now is rarely ever sick. She has got a very strong stomach now - thank god.

Yep cam dancer - my dd was definitely a happy spitter. She would puke with a big smile on her face :)

Muslins muslins muslins. Mine vomited all the time and without warning, our entire house was draped in them and we put covers on the sofas.

I was breastfeeding and I noticed that if I fed him from both sides in a sitting he would guaranteed throw up a vast quantity shortly after, but if I fed him only from one side, he would keep most of it down. Not all, mind you. So he had to be fed little, but often (there was no way he could go for 3 hours between feeds like some other babies and he couldn't sleep for long stretches at night because you couldn't fill him up before bedtime as it would just come up).

He started to get over it by about 4 months.

If they're happy when vomiting, it's not a problem, but if he seems to be in pain, see a doctor.

Thanks for the advice. I'll keep an eye on his reaction after the sicky episodes and take him to the docs if he looks unhappy. We've just graduated from muslins to heavy duty towels - the whole house will be covered at this rate!

Happy sicking is perfectly normal. Reflux is not so much his reaction afterwards as whether he's in pain during (as the acid from his stomach passes his throat it would sting/burn). Posseting (normal sicking) is how you tell they're full! There usually isn't as much coming up as you might think - imagine how far just a tablespoon of milk will spread out if you pour it on the floor. DD was a huge sicker - in fact still is to some degree (now gets carsick!) and we had some spectacular incidents. DH once lifted her over his head after a feed and he said it was literally as though someone emptied a jug of milk over him - he got drenched.

Mine throws up about 55 times a day. Perfectly happy though and huge. So I cover myself and everything around me in Muslins. DS was the same. It stopped at about 6 mths when he started eating foid
