Exciting/scary film for 10 year old boys - help!

Any help much appreciated on this one...

Ds1 is 10 in a couple of weeks and has asked to have 5 friends round to have pizza and watch a film. He's specifically asked if they can watch something exciting/scary - preferably a 12.

We're pretty strict about what ds's can watch in terms of the age certificate - I think the only 12 film he's seen so far is Spiderman (there might be others but I can't think of any).

I'd suggested Mission Impossible 3 as, apart from the beginning which I thought was a bit grim, it's a really fast, action film with not too much blood and gore.

He's asked for Fast and Furious 5 but I've got no clue what this is like. IMDB says it's pretty violent and the word 'fuck' comes up quite a bit, which rules it out I think....

So, any suggestions for a more grown up-type film that hasn't got loads of swearing and not too much violence.

Aaaaaarrrggghhhh.....

oh sorry - just to say the only reason I'm kind of entertaining the whole 12-film idea is that for the last couple of years when he's had friends round for his birthday, we've put a film on and they've only watched a bit then got bored and stopped watching - I'll bet money this happens again so am not so stressed they're all going to sit in silence and watch every minute.

Ho hum....

Well we've just watched LOTR with our two, and they found it exciting and scary. But I guess there is zero chance of a group sitting and watching the whole of that...

Have they seen The Princess Bride? Harry Potters?

happyhacker · 12/11/2011 18:58

Percy Jackson and the Lightening Thief?

happyhacker · 12/11/2011 18:59

X Men? CAsino Royale?

DottyDot · 12/11/2011 19:01

Thanks - they've not seen those - only harry potter 1 and 2 I think. Not sure ds1 would think they're 'grown up' enough but will see what he thinks..!

Sorry Happy - cross posted! X men is fab - might do the trick. I thought about Casino Royale but thought that might be a bit too violent? I loved it but just not sure...

Casino Royale has the torture scene in it, I wouldn't be happy with my 10 year old watching a bloke getting his balls pulped with a knotted rope.
Off to check our DVDs.

happyhacker · 12/11/2011 19:04

oh yeah, forgot about the torture scene, sorry :-/

DottyDot · 12/11/2011 19:10

Thanks... I get the feeling 10's going to be a tricky age!

Lara Croft, Hellboy 1 and 2, X-men, League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, Zorro, The Mummy 2 and 3 (First one is a 15), Volcano,The day after Tomorrow.
Could go for comedy; Night at The Museum 1 and 2 etc.
I'd always watch the film first to avoid errors like forgetting the torture bits. I'd check with other parents to make sure they were happy with their child being shown a 12 if they weren't yet 12.
Or I'd stick with a PG.

DownbytheRiverside · 12/11/2011 19:18

Forgot all the Tim Burton stuff; Nightmare Before Christmas, The Corpse Bride...

WhatIsPi · 12/11/2011 19:20

The Goonies? Not Casino Royale

HarrietSchulenberg · 12/11/2011 19:25

Percy Jackson and the Lightening Thief or Stormbreaker go down well in our house. They rather like Coraline at the moment too.

WhatIsPi · 12/11/2011 19:27

Indiana Jones surprisingly scary if he hasnt seen it - I made the mistake of showing it to ds before he was ready, it should be a 12 but is actually a PG.

Not really for the fainthearted though because of the spiked baddie towards the beginning etc.

tummytickler · 12/11/2011 19:39

My 10 and 8 year olds loved The Lost Boys and Stand By Me. Also Jaws!

thesurgeonsmate · 12/11/2011 19:39

I suffered from hysterical blindness during that scene in Casino Royale! Was a bit hungover, to be fair...

WhatIsPi · 12/11/2011 19:48

ooh shurely The Lost Boys is a 15?

DottyDot · 12/11/2011 19:59

We watched Coraline last Xmas eve and ds2 was pretty scared I have to say!

Ds1 would love to see Jaws - it's one he's been campaigning to see, so that's maybe an option.

Yes we're going to ask the other parents - if any say no to a 12 that's no problem at all - we've got lots of pg they can watch.

Was going to suggest The Goonies but was beaten to it.

Love Stand by me too. They're a little potty mouthed but in a 12 year old way.

What about Beetlejuice?? Funny too!

WhatIsPi · 12/11/2011 21:07

I would rather show mine The Goonies than Jaws - Jaws has a low rating as its a 70s film but its really a horror film and produces the same responses (and has lots of swearing and some dope smoking as well) - dont you remember the first time you saw it?

DottyDot · 13/11/2011 12:47

Thanks all - intense negotiation going on at the moment and Beetlejuice is definitely in the running Grin

Any more suggestions gratefully received...

Speed has been mentioned, which I think I'm OK about - any bits in it anyone can remember being deeply unsuitable..?

DottyDot · 13/11/2011 13:49

Woohoo! Ds1's just watched the Speed trailor and is very happy with it (prays no MNer tells me there's a whole load of swearing/gratuious sex in it I don't know about) Grin

You mean apart from the terrorism and potential mass murder Grin

There is the bit when KR's partner goes to DH's booby trapped house and it gets blown up, but you don't see any body parts flying about.

DH just mentioned Holy grail. Think there's quite a lot of gore but in a 10 year old boy comedy stylee!

DottyDot · 13/11/2011 15:42

Doughnutty - I know, I know..... Blush It's tricky - I feel like we're pretty strict on ds's most of the time - they don't watch half of what their friends watch, or play on the kinds of computer games - but I don't want ds1 to feel embarrassed when his friends come round for his birthday.

Although, having said that, I said I was happy to take them bowling/to the pictures/out for tea and he was adamant he wanted them round to our house - so we can't be all that bad Grin

Always difficult getting the balance right between them feeling all 'grown up' and them actually still being children.

Will have a look at Holy Grail, although I think the Speed trailer has done the trick...
