My ds will be 7 months at christmas and family and friends are asking what to buy him. I'm not really sure what to suggest! Any recommendations for toys for this age?

Babies are not interested in toys at this age.
I learnt my lesson on this one. My DS had lots for his first xmas, a walking bear thing, the giraffe you can stand up with etc.
It was a waste of money.
My DS2 will be 7 months at xmas too.
I have bought him a winnie the pooh vtech walker thing that was half price in sainsburys, some lamaze books, rattles from ELC. He likes his sophie le giraffe though.
All things bought have been on offer.
It's not a lot compared to what was bought for my PFB. Seven month will like the paper frankly it comes in.

My 7mo is currently playing with a tissue and couldn't be happier. For christmas we have bought him and my older son a sled. He'll appreciate it when he's older.

have you seen "waddle" and "gallop" books by Rufus Butler Seder? they're really nice, hard pages so they can help turning them, the animals are move/jump/hop/fly as you turn each page, lovely and simple but quite engrossing :) you can get them on amazon. My (now 2) DS has always liked books, but also balls, even at that age he would roll a bouncy ball back and fore and even attempt to catch a soft ball (he could catch and throw them with ease by 12m) - you only want simple stuff at that age really, my DS was bought a shapesorter at that age that he only started using at 18+. you could ask for money for a savings account for him instead and he wouldn't know the difference... I'll have a look at those books as they sound great! Sophie the giraffe is a hit in our house too.
Thanks for all suggestions!

My DD loved her ring stacker at that age, and they're really cheap. We also got her a ball pool which she has enjoyed since she could sit unaided at 6mo.

Ring stacker, books, musical instruments/shakers and a nice scarf to play peepo :)

also bear in mind that Christmas presents are for life (or at least the next year) not just for Christmas :) so maybe ask for things for slightly older age group. My DD was 3mo last Christmas so needed nothing, so we asked her GPs for a play table with balls. We brought it out when she was 9mo and it is still her favourite toy at 13mo.

Jumperoo! Pricey but wonderful. You can get them second hand for much more reasonable prices.

I have a pull along phone with buttons that light up and play music - it's early learning centre. DS is obsessed with it.

He's also just discovered soft bricks too and stacks and tips them over. cue endless giggles.
