Can your 5 year old do this sum in their head?

Ds2 is 5 and in P1 (first year of primary school so I guess equivalent to yR) and has shown no sign of being "academic".

However he sometimes surprises me. He was asking about learning to snowboard and I said he would be able to learn when he is 8. I casually asked him how many years that would be, and after a fraction of second's thought he replied "3"

I know it is an easy sum, and I'm certainly not expecting you to tell me my son is a genius. But this from a child who doesn't reliably count to 20 Hmm Also they haven't done any sums at school yet, only learning to write the numbers etc

Now you are all going to tell me that your 2 year olds can do this...

My 6 yr old could at 5.

I just asked DS (3) how many years it will be until he is six, because I was bored.

He replied "That will be half past... eight? Seven. That will be half past seven."

Just asked my 4yo (young Yr R) and he could answer it both for his age, and if he was 5.

My son is in Reception and does sums like that all the time. He is pretty obsessed with numbers though.

My 5 year old daughter might not but she can tell me the sequence of planets from the sun outwards!
Kids are odd.

Thanks. Particularly liked BertieBotts ds's answer Grin

It is nice to know that perhaps ds's brain is working in there somewhere Grin He is pretty much behind compared to the rest of his class when you look at their drawings and writing (his pencil grip is still not right) and listen to the parents talk about reading.

So nice to know that once they start doing 'rithmatic he may start to.. well if not "shine" at least be on par.

Kids are odd indeed, the thing ds loves is money - can recognise all the coins and can tell you if he has four 5pences then he has 20p, or if he has two twenties and a ten he has 50.

No, my 5yo can't.

I switch off listening to other parents and suggest you do too.
Your son sounds like he is doing well, children pick up loads and never cease to surprise what they have stored in their little brains.
