when to move from potty to toilet?

my DS is 2.7 and has been using his potty for the last 2 months. We are trying to get him to use the toilet instead as it is alot easier when we are out and about and well, he needs learn some time. His friend at nursery is the same age and he uses the toilet so i thought this might encourage him but he thinks only his friend can use the toilet and only he can use his potty. He has sat on the toilet at nursery but not actually done anything on it. I have bought one of the child seats to fit over ours but he won't entertain it ( i am thinking of getting one with handles instead) he also has a step in case he wants to try standing up but he won't try. He can't use his potty forever so wether he likes it or not he needs to get used to a toilet. Is it soon to give up the potty?

DD is 2.7 too and potty trained about a month ago. I made a big deal of her using the public loo when we went to the playground and now she really likes it. She still doesn't use the loo at home really (even with her step she can't get up herself and although we've got one of those 'family' toilet seats she can't get the seat down and I think finds it too much hassle) unless I'm there to help. She likes the independence of going and finding her potty and getting herself undressed, I think. Do you hold on to your DS when he's sitting on the loo? Or do you let him stand up? He might like to stand up to wee 'like daddy' especially if you give him something to aim at!

Sorry, just reread the last sentence of your post - ignore what I said about standing up!

When we try the standing up it's when daddy is there so he can see what to do but he still shows no interest (apart from laughing!) If we try to sit him on he just clings on to us and won't even sit down. DS too loves going to his potty himself and even tells us to go away whilst he does his business! I suppose 2 months of us saying 'go on your potty' have stuck and now he doesn't want to do it any differently.

Maybe chill out for now and leave him on the potty. It's easier when they see all the other boys standing up for wees and want to join them- eg at nursery/pre-school. My DS was a bit older when trained so went quickly onto the loo. He was also very tall.

I got DD onto the toilet about 3 weeks into potty training as I didn't want her to be wedded to the potty and I can't stand poos in the potty! She was older though when training- 2.8 I think. She is quite short though and struggles to get up herself even with step so I normally have to help. Can just about manage it herself now- almost 3.

By the way, a lot of kids are scared of the toilet and maybe your DS is re sitting on it. You can do various things to normalise sitting on the toilet -softly softly, but maybe leave it a month or so if it's a bit distressing at the moment.

yes i think i may wait a while before trying him again. its obviously less scary for him at nursery as their toilets are so small. they do say that he follows his friend to toilet though and his friend says 'come on, on toilet!' if he starts using the toilet at nursery it might just fall into place at home. thanks

have you seen those 'musical' potty's ( I got ours from Asda) - they look exactly like little toilets with a flush which makes a sound just like a big toilet.. even get a sticker when it senses they've 'done' something.. about £20 I think...

I moved our LO onto this once he'd got the hang of the potty, it was his 'toilet' and pretty soon he wanted to sit on the big boys toilet!!
