4 year old really clingy after virus and infection. Advice please.

Hi.

My 4year old DS is always very outgoing and fun. He loves going to nursery, gymnastics, to play with friends etc. He had a bit of a cough that wasn't going away for a few weeks so I took him to GP who diagnosed tonsillitis and said that the cough was viral as the chest was clear and gave penicillin.

He has become really clingy to me. Won't go to his Dad (my DH), cries and screams if I leave the house, cries going into nursery (even when DH took him). I took him back to GP yesterday and he says now that the tonsils are fine so stop penicillin but he's still really clingy, upset and not himself.

Has anyone else experienced this? Did it resolve quickly? Any advice? There are no issues at nursery, lovely kids and teachers and he enjoys himself once he settles.

I'm just so worried about him and would appreciate any advice.
Thanks.

maybe he is just still feeling a bit rubbish?

it's a bit bizarre for a GP to prescribe an anti-biotic and then tell you not to finish the course, even if the tonsils do look ok at the moment... weird

Hi

Thanks for your reply. I was wondering that too. It was a different GP at the same practice we saw second time round.

I am just concerned cos it's so out of character and the clinginess seemed to come on all of a sudden. He didn't even seem at all ill with the cough or tonsils.

awwwww poor wee sausage

I expect he's a bit post-viral so coddling and cuddles this weekend

He's prob off his food a bit too

Boo! It's horrible when they're ill, but that's probably what it is, he's just not quite himself again yet. I had similar, all be it slightly older version of this after DS (just 5) had an ear infection. Even when he was better we had quite a few instances of picking him up from school and him bursting into tears (hadn't done this ever in weeks preceding). Give him time and cuddles, lots of sleep and hopefully he'll be back to rights soon enough.

Thanks Tgger and 5318...

I'm such a worrier and hate it when wee ones are ill. Thanks for the reassurance. It is so horrid when you can't flick a switch and make everything OK.

Off to check on him before I go to bed.

go and nuzzle him

Seems cheery this morning. Still coughing away. I'm taking him to my parents for a bit this morning so I'll see if he'll stay without me for half an hour. Loads of cuddles from GPs.
