7mo DD not mouthing toys

DD is almost 7mo and loves playing with her toys. She'll reach for them, grab them, examine them in great detail but will never ever put them in her mouth. The same goes for finger foods which she'll happily play with but will never put anywhere near her mouth. In fact the only things she puts in her mouth are her fingers which she sucks on for comfort. Was wondering if anyone has experienced similar. I'm not worried but she's so different to my older DCs who covered everything in dribble within seconds!

Maha, what are her toys? are they uniformly plastic?

I'm wondering if you might consider introducing a treasure basket, or things like oranges/lemons/limes that smell, have interesting textures and random, non-uniform rolling movements?

She has a mixture - some plastic, some wooden and a few soft toys. Most have different textures, make noises etc. Her favourites at the moment are a wooden caterpillar and DH's watch! Will try giving her an orange later and see what she does. Like the treasure box idea too, thanks!

very old thread about what to put in treasure box

I had a child like this - she's 19 now. You could let her play with buttons or other small things as she never put anything in her mouth. She is now at university with no problems!

All the same, a treasure basket is a good idea. You could look at www.earlyyearsplanning.co.uk - they do nice treasure baskets - or you could make your own.

Thanks everyone for the reassurance. It's funny but I used to wish my older DC didn't do it quite so much as all their toys ended up saturated. Now I have a baby who never sticks toys in her mouth, I begin to wonder why not? Can't win :). I'll mention it to the HV but will make the most of it in the meantime.
