DS is breastfeed (quite a lot) and BLW. He was until weaning going 4 or 5 times a day. when we started weaning he dropped down to once a day. He's now slowed down to a poo every few days but now he hasn't done a poo since Saturday night. So six days.
He gets plenty of fluids, eats all manner of things so plenty of fruit and veg, some cheese some meat, bread, oats, yogurt ect
Should I be worried?

My ds2 was like this - on weaning, he got less and less regularly and then, when he did go, it was certainly spectacular. I think the record was something like 7 days.

Glad to hear it's not just us
Today is day seven! I'm a little bit scared as to what may arrive at any moment.

hi hazchem

My Ds also got constipated at first and took him a long time to adjust to solids, but eventually he got there. Well the point is if your ds is not crying while passing poo or while trying go; its all fine. Also if he is having good heavy nappies he doesnt need loads of extra water. Its just his body needs some time. If you want you can give him raisins, prune juice (just 15 mls twice its very strong) , orange juice, brown sugar water.

But if your baby is crying for poo then consult your health visitor or gp as they should prescribe you lactulose. But dont give lactulose unless necessary and try not to make him dependent on it.
hope this helps somehow.

My DS also started suffering with constipation as he went onto solid foods. He was obviously uncomfortable and it was affecting his sleep. We took him to the doctor when he hadn't been for 9 days (despite prunes and fruit juice and all the normal stuff) and a rectal exam caused him to poo all over the examining table (what a relief!)

He prescribed lactulose but that didn't help and after 9 days we had to go back again to get some suppositories, which did work.

He was then on lactulose twice a day and we were told to give him a suppository and force him to go if he hadn't been for three days.

You shouldn't just leave him for long periods of time without pooing as it stretches the bowel and causes further problems with constipation. Also, when they do go it will be painful and horrible and possibly cause psychological aversion to pooing which then causes them to withhold.

So I'd go to the doctor.

My DS2 was also breastfed and BLW and the same thing happened with the poo cycle. As this had also happened with my DS1, at first I wasnt overly concerned and did the whole "increase fluids, lots of fruit and veg etc" but nothing worked and he became quite distressed when he finally did go and was grumpy and uncomfortable inbetween. Several trips to the Dr, Lactoluse, suppositories and what not, lots of too graphic to post assisted evacuations and now in a cycle of "holding" we were finally (when he was 13 months old) referred to the hospital who diagnosed a milk protein intolerance. He's now on a dairy free diet and is doing great.

Hopefully as with my DS1 your little one just needs time to adjust to solids but just to be aware that some food intolerances can cause chronic constipation.

xx
