Should I be worrying?

DS1 is 3.5 and seems bright and articulate. However, he doesn't seem to recognise numbers or letters and sometimes gets mixed up between the two.

I read to him a lot, but haven't made any particular effort towards him reading etc. Up until now I've stayed away from any kind of focussed learning, apart from the usual stuff when we're out and about (recognising numbers in the lift etc). Should I be doing something about this at home? He goes to nursery 2 days and they haven't raised any concerns.

Perfectly normal, nothing to worry about just yet, there are many, many 3.5 year olds who don't have a clue about numbers and letters. :)

Thanks PandaNot.

My gut says he's fine, but I don't want to let him down by not supporting him enough learning wise.

You say he's bright and articulate so you're obviously doing something right! Just keep doing it and when he gets to school they will let you know if there is anything to be concerned about. If he were in my nursery class I wouldn't be at all worried.

That's really helpful, thanks for putting my mind at rest.
