Smiling, then crying uncontrollably...them smiling again!?

Anyone know why my 10 week old son suddenly gets the screaming ab dabs for no discernable reason....a split second after smiling and gurgling at me. It normally happends in the evenings...although can happen during the day. He's fed, slept well and been entertained, is lying in my arms happy, then his face scrunches up and he lets rip for several minutes. The hairdryer seems to calm him eventually..........but Im confused by the sudden change. He hasn't been for a poo for just over two days, could that be it? I'm befuddled as he is a good baby most of the time and doing well n the EASY routine.

Er... wind / tummy ache? I know it sounds trivial but my DD does similar in the evening on occasion and I find she feels a lot better after a good burp or fart. She was quite awful for her first 0-12 weeks then it got better, and now I've had 3 consecutive nights of the dozy/half-asleep then jerking awake with a scream thing but I think it's because I've just started weaning her this week and she's having a few digestive issues getting used to new food.

Does your LO quieten a bit if you hold him upright over your shoulder and do a gentle bounce? If he does, he probably needs a bit of help getting his wind out in either direction!

Or it's something else entirely. Maybe someone with more experience will be along in a bit!

You said that he has slept well so can you def. rule out tiredness? My immediate response before I saw your wrote about him sleeping well is that it sounds like he is overtired. All of mine have done exactly this and I learnt to recognise that when laughter and smiles turn quickly to tears, in our case it has meant they are very tired. We all get more emotional when tired. Or does it sound more like a cry of pain?

I think you're right Solola. He does seem overtired when he does this. He's been much better when he has a good 2 hour sleep at lunchtime. Lesson learnt!

Mine does this too but can start half way through a feed and seems to be in real pain, can last 20 min or so. I think it is colic but can be really tough to calm him down, then he is fine and will feed again. It is heart breaking to hear and see his little face all screwed up.

my 7 month old will be falling asleep in my arms and then throw her head back and cry out. I put it down to tummy ache, so just keep winding til she falls asleep.

Sounds like wind to me

Does he do jerky movements when he cries?
