dd suddenly choking, gagging and being sick?

Dd will be 1 year in 2 weeks, she has always been fine with food and loves trying different foods. But in the last 2 weeks she's started choking gagging and being sick. This is on bannana, sandwiches, organix biscuits, grapes etc. It's almost like shes forgotten how to eat.

Is this normal? What should I do?

I'm posting this after a traumatic snack time where she started choking on a chewed biscuit (it wasn't too much for her mouth) I had to interviene and scoop it out, she then threw up and was very upset. She calmed down and had some bannana and did the same thing. She's been refusing all food since and I'm just about to try her with some pizza for lunch. I'm trying to be relaxed so she's not picking up anxietys from me but im quite worried about her.

I should also add she was diagnosed with reflux as a baby, but since sorting out her cmp allergy hasn't had a problem. she also has tounge tie but its never been an issue.

I would take her to the gp to check all is ok.

Dd1 was a gagger and would only eat puree until she was 2 even when she was 2.5 she would gag on crisps and biscuits, eventually she grew out of it so it was nothing to worry about.

addictediam · 20/10/2011 12:28

That's what I don't understand, this is a new thing, shes never really had pureed food, she's always preferred finger food and has never gagged or thrown up.

Maybe taking her to see the Dr would be a good idea. (although they have me down as a parinoid mum and a trouble maker!)

Marne · 20/10/2011 13:36

I'm sure they wont think you are a parinoid mum.

Also it could be a problem with her tonsils, my step son has a similar problem and it turned out that his tonsils were too big (he would gag on meat ect and had to chew things for longer in order to swallow), he had his tosils taken out and was then fine.

larrygrylls · 20/10/2011 13:50

Most likely she has a nausea bug, or tonsilitis, if it has never been a problem before.

addictediam · 20/10/2011 16:18

Thanks, the hv turned up at toddler group this afternoon and she said the same thing, probably just a sore throat. If it doesn't improve in a week I'll take her to see the Dr. Thanks

I wouldn't wait a week, I would take her as soon as possible to find out the cause.

You never know it could be a polyp growing in her throat (I knew someone who had one) or it could be a piece of food stuck (sounds far fetched but again know someone).

If it's just a sore throat then she may need anti-biotics.

thisisyesterday · 20/10/2011 18:42

i wouldn't wait a week either, it sounds very worrying.
i would take her as soon as possible

addictediam · 20/10/2011 19:26

I think you might be right, shes now finding it difficult to swallow her milk [hconfused]. I think we need to ring the Dr tomorrow morning.

thisisyesterday · 20/10/2011 21:05

if she can't even swallow milk i would get her down to a&e

i don't want to alarm you, but issues with swallowing could potentially mean issues with breathing surely???

at the very least please call NHS direct

addictediam · 20/10/2011 21:26

She finished her bottle she just kept spluttering it. Her breathing seems fine, and she's gone to sleep easy enough. She doesn't have a temp or any other symptoms of being ill. I'll keep an eye on her tonight and get her a Dr appointment first thing tomorrow unless she gets worse tonight.

dd does this, but she has always done it a bit, she doesnt really do it with her milk anymore but is terrible with food. iahve had her checked out by the dr and she is fine just has a strong gag reflex.

struggling with her milk would worry me but is she maybe getting a cold, a bit snuffly, or a sore throat, then maybe drinking the milk is irritating her like a tickly cough maybe.

if she does it again you could always try a slower flow teat to see if that helps?

but yes def drs tomorrow, hope she is ok xxx

thisisyesterday · 20/10/2011 22:02

yeah, do keep checking on her.
my worry would be that it has come on suddenly and worsened over the day and that it could get worse still iyswim?

and hospitals would far rather see a healthy baby with worried parents than miss a baby that is really ill... so don't feel like you shouldn't go.

4madboys · 21/10/2011 08:53

how is she this morning addicted? hope you had an ok night? xxx

addictediam · 21/10/2011 09:27

She's the same this morning, had a few problems with her milk during the night, then she was reluctant to eat her breakfast then completly refused after choking again.

I rang the sugery and the dr called me back (its how its done here, you cant get appointments just a call back and they fit you in if they decide they want to see you) dr said 'she's probably feeling ill or something, she should be fine' [hhmm] he didn't want to see her and he wasn't really intrested in what I was saying. The words probably and should have filled me with lots of confidence! If she develops anymore symptoms or it hasn't got better by Monday I'll kick up a huge fuss and get her seen by someone.

that's a shit response from the Dr.

if it were me i would be seeking medical attention today. if nothing else you need to make sure she isn't getting dehydrated. she can't just not eat and drink :-(

please take her to hospital, or a walk-in centre if you have one you can get to.

or ring back and demand an emergency apppointment

Marne · 21/10/2011 17:01

I agree, i would take her to an out of hours doctor, walk in or A&E, she needs to be looked at and it only takes a few minutes to look down her throat.

Conundrumish · 21/10/2011 17:31

I'd take her to A&E or walk in centre too.

thisisyesterday · 24/10/2011 21:00

hi addictediam, how is your dd now?

girliefriend · 24/10/2011 21:06

I saw something similiar to this on the telly and it turned out the little boy had a coin stuck in his gullet!!

Although I am also wondering if this has turned into a bit of a psychological problem in either case you need to speak to a health professional.

addictediam · 25/10/2011 08:54

She seems better, not doing it as much. I have a Dr appointment this afternoon (with the only compitent Dr at my sugery), so ill get her to have a quick look at her.

@addictediam Hi I know this is a very old
post but my boy has just randomly started doing this. He recently had a stomach bug but is all better now but still gagging at foods. Did you find out what was wrong with your little one?

addictediam · 26/09/2023 19:09

Hi, I only vaguely remember this! I'm sat with my almost 13 year old and she eats food fine now! I think we went back to mainly milk for a few days and basic finger foods. I think it was to do with her being ill. Like I said, I only vaguely remember though!
I hope your little one is back to his normal self soon!

@BaconBap88 hello, my turn to chase up on this post now! My boy has just started doing the same. Did it also pass for you? Did you find a root cause?

@newmummy23 Hi! Yes it passed after a week or two! It was short lived and I’m not sure why he was doing it. Kids are weird!
