prettyfull, the mean mommy comes to stay - just decline or water the milk down til its practically no milk, as milk does coat the digestive tract and stiffle appetite, thats a holisitic approach.
morn and am is ok.

yep.. you'll have have to be little bit strict till your little one get the idea

wewishyouamerryKITTYmas · 21/12/2005 08:37

My DD 17 months has 2 beakers of milk in the morning and one at bedtime probably about a pint and a half in total.

What about juice, DD has either a beaker of water or 1/8 fruit juice throughout the day (she usually manages 3 large beakers a day)? I would offer her the juice or water first with some food.

Twiglett · 21/12/2005 08:38

just give her a bottle in the morning and one before bed then no more ..

give her meals and water or diluted juice in a cup during the day

you'll have to be strict but well done for identifying it as a problem

(you can start dropping one every couple of days if it makes it easier)

Prettyfull · 21/12/2005 08:38

Even if she hardly eats her solids??? I feel so bad doing that!!! but ty for your help

OP posts:
Twiglett · 21/12/2005 08:41

she hardly eats solids BECAUSE of the milk

its causal

IMHO you'd be far 'meaner' letting this continue into a real problem rather than nipping it in the bud now

she needs to eat real food not rely on milk .. she's a toddler and needs a wide range of nutrients

wewishyouamerryKITTYmas · 21/12/2005 08:51

My DD has never been one for sitting and having spoonfuls of food fed to her, she has breakfast and lunch and snacks on a plate on a little table then she helps herself during the day. What about putting out a plate of finger food snacks and letting her help herself?

Bozza · 21/12/2005 08:54

Once again totally agree with Twiglett.

Twiglett · 21/12/2005 08:57

thank you Bozza

Clayhead · 21/12/2005 08:57

I think Twiglett is right - this is one of those situations where you have to take the lead and just stop giving so much milk.

Have you ever watched Tiny Tearaways? There have been examples of similar situations recently but with older kids. As Twiglett says, if you don't deal with it now, it can turn into a much bigger problem.

Good luck!

Prettyfull · 21/12/2005 09:02

Awwww i hope this works, im gona try this and add more finger foods. Im gona start today but just take away her dinner time bottle and see how that goes, if it goes well then 2moro mayb take away the lunch time bottle? Lunchtime is the time she will not eat, iv tried loads of diff foods but she just doesnt seem hungry and thast before giving her a bottle, i'l let ya know how it goes, thankyou all

I am in a spirit of Christmas cheer - it is my last half day at work.

christmaslovingbluealien · 21/12/2005 09:04

ha!
my almost three year old would have five bottles a day if i let her,
9 in the morning and she has already had two1

Bozza · 21/12/2005 09:05

No I think even if it doesn't go well you should take away the next bottle.

Have you tried putting the daytime milk in a cup so that she doesn't drink so much?

Prettyfull · 21/12/2005 09:08

iv tried putting it in a cup but it goes everywhere, iv tried out of a beaker but although its the exact same milk, she screws her face up as if it were something disgusting. Iv also tried cows milk but that again just gets a screwed up face and chucked on the floor!

the only way that i foudn with my three kids is to hide thebottles.
no bottle, no milk, so they have to eat food.

dh just messed it all up by going out and buying dd more bottles coz he didnt want her to miss out on milk. git.

Clayhead · 21/12/2005 09:13

When the other milk/ebakers get chucked does she then receive her bottle after all? Sometimes you just have to be really strict and ditch something even though in the short term it's horrible and hard work, otherwise she will aloways know the bottle is going to be there in the end...

Clayhead · 21/12/2005 09:14

beakers

Prettyfull · 21/12/2005 09:21

for go d sake, just been on phone to my mum and shes moaning saying i shouldnt cut out her calcium!!!! I think its best to start cutting it out and add mroe food but wish mum would listen!! Gona make her read thsi when she comes over!! Oh and yes your right, i never thoguht about it b4 but yes i do STUPIDLY end up givin her a bottle when shes decides she doesnt want it from a beaker :-(

If it helps, my dd didn't have any milk for 2 years between 1 and 3. She stopped bf at 1 and drank only water until she was 3.

Of course, that didn't mean she had no calcium as she had cheese, yoghurt etc.

Bozza · 21/12/2005 09:57

DD has a beaker (thats what I meant really) of milk in the morning (5oz ish) and thats all. She's 19 months. But she does have weetabix, one yoghurt a day, plus I cook various milky dishes and she loves cheese.

I definitely think that she shouldn't be having bottles of milk during the day.

Prettyfull · 21/12/2005 10:00

ok, do ya think aswell i shoudl be changing her to cows milk??? or one thing at a time huh lol

I am no expert, but the amount of milk is stifling her appetite I would say. My DS 2.3 has a bottle of cowsmilk (9 oz) at night and about 6oz in the morning (at around 6am) we tried not giving the morning one recently and he ate a proper breakfast, toast & dry cereal. However, he knows that if he says 'bot bot' 100 hundred times in our bedroom at 5.30 am, one of us will get up and give him it. Good luck

Prettyfull · 21/12/2005 10:21

lol well thankfully my dd hasnt learnt to say bot bot yet lol!!!! Thankyou all for your advise!!One more thing, does anyone recommend using growing up milk, or straight on to full fat milk?

Twiglett · 21/12/2005 10:32

you are free to change her to cow's milk from a year

all the different formula types .. hungry babies, follow-on milk etc are a marketing con .. formula companies aren't allowed to advertise the formula for newborns because it goes against breastfeeding advice so they develop other ways to keep your money coming in

cow's milk is cheaper and just as good (so long as no allergies) .. personally I'd just switch it but then I don't like spending money

as for calcium .. green leafy veg, yogurt, cheese .. provides plenty .. she simply doesn't need to drink milk that many times a day she really doesn't

good luck it will be hard to begin with but in a few days she'll probably start eating more .. you just have to stand firm and don't expect her to eat more than a few mouthfulls at any one time .. she has a very small tummy still
