How long after your DC learnt to walk could you cope without a pushchair?

And what kind of distances did you regularly walk?

Wondering if AIBU!

DD1 is 3.5 and is obviously a good walker but can be slow and likes to stop to pick up stones/point at leaves/run up random driveways. Luckily I have DD2 (15mo) and a phil and teds so she generally walks a bit and sits a bit when we're late as the pushchair is always with us. Unless I've bought too much shopping and then she has to walk!

I don't think there's any shame in using the pushchair when you need it tbh, especially if you travel on foot a lot. I suspect DD2 will be in it til she's 18 and then I will have to buy an old lady shopping trolley!

DD walked at 8.5 months and is still refusing to walk any distance at 3.5 years. I need to use my double buggy (also have baby) or use the buggy board.

I was also a lazy mare apparently.

Allboxedin · 02/10/2011 22:10

DD started walking at 10 months on her own. I would take her out of the pushchair to have a little toddle in town from about 12 months and she would walk a fairly good distance by 15 months.
If we were just going to our local shops I would leave the PC at home by 18 months.
She is now 23 months and rarely uses it.
I say get them going as soon as possible. My DD has always been a good walker and is always (apart from odd tantrum)happy to hold my hand or walk with her backpack and reigns, however I have one friend who has a toddler the same age and she has only just started taking her out walking on the roads and she is an absolute nightmare and hates not being in it when her little brother is.

Can't remember ds, but he certainly out of it by about 3.5 years, expect in exceptional circs.

Dd started walking late at 18months. We sold the buggy when she was 2 years 8months. At that stage she happily & efficiently walked to & from school to drop/pick up her brother (c 15-20 minutes each way assuming a straightish line/no picking flowers type route) - ie 35 minutes morning & lunchtime.

An0therName · 02/10/2011 22:12

we used it the odd time for DS1 until he was nearly 4 - he could walk quite a way from 18mo, and walked alot from 2.5 it was just v slow and also lots of moaning- he would go ages on his balance bike so we used that alot.

funnypeculiar · 02/10/2011 22:15

Oh, dd also had a micro scooter very early which made things much easier - they can manage those scarily easily!

abendbrot · 02/10/2011 22:21

Depends if you're in a hurry or not. Once they start walking you can technically toddle around with them all day, but life tends to be too short to do that. Remember they'll never walk as fast as you until their legs are the same size as yours.

youarekidding · 02/10/2011 22:26

me or DS? Grin

DS about 1 month, he loved to walk and be carried when tired. Was great when he was 11 months but not at 2/3 years old.

Me - never! Loved having somewhere to store bags, restrain keep DS safe.

TBH by 2yo DS could walk about 2 miles but I also got a scooter as he was so slow.

MegBusset · 02/10/2011 22:38

DS1 walked at 15mo and was in the buggy til about 3, then buggy board for another year or so. Now at 4.7 walks everywhere, no problem. Won't go on his scooter at all Confused

DS2 walked at 16mo and now at 2.6 would happily walk pretty much all the time, but I do use the buggy for the school run otherwise the 10-minute walk would take 40 mins each way.

NomDePC · 02/10/2011 22:43

DS1 gave up the buggy altogether at 3.4 when his little brother took it over (I flatly refused to get a double buggy). But TBH he had barely used it prior to that for months. I stopped using it for shopping and general trips out and about somewhere around 2.6, so only really used it for things like days out to the zoo when I knew he'd have to walk a long way and would get knackered. But then we never had to walk all that far or get anywhere on time, particularly - we live in a little village, so most things are either within half a mile (ie in the village) or a drive away (ie in the local town).

NomDePC · 02/10/2011 22:45

Forgot to say, DS didn't walk until 17 months, so not an early bloomer! He's now just 4, and I'm finding the bike increasingly useful (though only when we're on our own or with DH as well, as it's pretty impossible for me to help him with his bike and push the baby in the buggy as well).

feelingratheroverwhelmed · 02/10/2011 22:56

DS walked at 10months. He's two in a couple of weeks but I still use the buggy regularly and am about to buy a double (due any day now). He's got pretty good stamina, but is stupidly distractable and it would take us hours to get anywhere if we tried to walk everywhere. I had a horrid experience a couple of weeks ago when his SmartTrike fell apart halfway home from the park. Luckily I had the reins with me, but I ended up with him swinging on them most of the way home trying to pick up any old crap from the floor, whilst also trying to carry two pieces of the bloody trike, whilst very pregnant!
So, stamina isn't everything...

LaWeasel · 03/10/2011 07:54

Ho-hum.

Problem I seem to be having with DD isn't stamina (I'm sure she CAN do it and she does on other occasions) she just doesn't want to, and as you know, can't force espeically on timed journeys...

I think I'll give up for a while longer in the buggy.

I think I'll let her keep the buggy for longer I meant!

we had that problem and the solution was the balance bike - or a scooter would also be good - have to be happy with them being a bit more independant though

Bramshott · 03/10/2011 09:23

I think it honestly depends on what makes your life easier. If you live in a flat, or somewhere with loads of steps, or have younger DCs, it's probably in your interests to get them out of the buggy as early as possible. Clearly 2 year olds can walk very reasonable distances, although never as fast as an adult, and usually with some element of 'persuasion'. Some people enjoy making the walk fun, and don't mind taking a long time to get somewhere.

OTOH, I live somewhere with easy parking, wide, flat pavements, and am often in a rush, so DD2 was in the buggy on one or two occasions each week until she was almost 4.5. It made life easier for me. Now she's at school we have ditched the buggy and she walks fine.

You don't get a medal for ditching the buggy by 3, unless it makes life easier for you to do so!

aStarInStrangeways · 03/10/2011 09:59

it's definitely a question of you both being happy to give up the buggy. my ds started walking at around 14 months and by 2 could certainly walk a couple of miles; however, i still took the pushchair as he would get tired/take ages/moan lots. i only stopped taking the Volo out when dd was born 9 weeks ago, as ds is now a very heavy 3yo and still gets tired on occasion. don't have money or space for a double buggy so now we have to choose our transport options according to where we're going and what we're doing:

a) ds on scooter, dd in huge comfy pram.
b) dd in Maclaren Techno, ds on scooter, me wearing sling in case ds has tiredness meltdown - can then transfer dd to sling and convert Techno to sitting position for ds.
c) car! the most popular option for me atm Blush
