The Polar Express is on at the IMAX cinema in Manchester - do you think a 4.5 yr old and just 3 yr old would sit through it? Hmmmmm....would love to take them but would they last 93 mins?

I think they would.

(If you have snacks, don't let them know about them, then you can bring 'em out if they start to get restless.)

Janh · 17/12/2005 17:29

Would there be another adult or just you, GDG? An hour and a half is a long time for a 3-yr-old to sit still and quiet - if there were 2 adults one could take him out for a short break.

Glitterygook · 17/12/2005 17:31

Hmm, it would have to be one of us that takes them as we can't take ds3 (16 months) and have nobody to look after him. I think ds1 might sit through it but perhaps not ds2 but at the same time, I don't think it's fair to just take one. Ds2 would be really upset. Maybe I should leave it until ds2 is a bit older.

i took ds3 to see charlie and the chocolate factory. he is now 18 months so would have been something like your ds3s age at the time. was just me and my grandma, took loads of popcorn and drinks and deprived him of his usual sleep so he stuffed himself and then nodded off.

if you take all three and have 2 adults, at least if you have to go out with ds3 one of you will be around if ds2 wanted to leave aswell. give it a go - the worst that can happen is that you end up leaving early, and if you do ds1 will probably appreciate the experience anyway. could you get the dvd aswell incase he doesnt finish it at the cinema?

I took dd to see the new Wallace and Grommit film for her 3rd birthday in an ordinary cinema. She sat through it fine, got a bit restless around an hour in at a slow point and I produced some sweeties and she made it to the end and loved it!

foxinsocks · 17/12/2005 18:57

one of us takes our eldest and we leave the younger one behind and we used to do this when dd was 4 and ds was 3. Sometimes it's quite nice to treat just one of them. Let the 3 yr old know that when he/she is 4, he can go to the cinema just like your eldest (and if you feel bad, get the 3 yr old out a dvd to watch at home while you're at the cinema).

foxinsocks · 17/12/2005 18:57

(if you are worried - I know that ds at 3 would never have sat that long but maybe yours has better sitting skills!)

SilentBite · 17/12/2005 19:00

My dd sat through the magic roundabout at 2.5 so I would say yes

foxinsocks · 17/12/2005 19:01

sorry, missed that they were all boys (doh!)

roisin · 17/12/2005 19:54

I don't know what your boys are like Glitterygook, but ds2 was pretty terrified by Polar Express last year (age 5) - there are some scary bits on the train (like a huge rollercoaster), and also some vertigo bits iyswim.

I can imagine it would be fantastic on IMAX - but possibly completely overwhelming for little ones.

Also - do you know the plot? It's basically about belief/doubts in Santa. This was a bit confusing for ds2, who - at that age - didn't realise doubting was an option.

Having said all that, where is the IMAX in Manchester? I'm actually quite tempted to take the boys.

roisin · 17/12/2005 19:56

What I mean is I don't know how sensitive your boys are wrt films. Obviously I have met them, and know they are absolutely gorgeous.

BourneInAMangerVille · 17/12/2005 20:00

lol i took dd a month or so ago (she's now 2.4) knowing full well she wouldn't sit through a film, but i just couldn't wait to show her the cinema experience. We went to a Kids Club showing, first was Madagascar which she'd never seen, she lasted 10 mins, 2nd Babe which she'd seen on video several times, and she last 50 mins!!! V impresesd....

Thanks all, I think we've decided to leave it. Good points about the film Roisin - I've bought it for ds1 on DVD though as a Mum at school recommended it. HOpe it will be OK.

IMAX is at the Filmworks I think

Yes that's what i did Jbck, kids club cheap showings. (Other kids v annoying though!!) Also dd knowing the film already helped! And she's never had popcorn other than then so that made her happy too!
It's the whole cinema experience i wanted to introduce her to, not necessarily to watch a film avidly all the way through...

Mistletoo · 18/12/2005 15:59

thank goodness gg!

nikkie · 18/12/2005 18:52

my dd2 went at just under 3 to the cinema and she sat through(except toilet trips ) just provide lots of food!
BTW she used to sit on the floor in front of the front row as she fell throughthe seats and she prefered not to sit on coats etc!

RudolphsAuntMabel · 18/12/2005 19:40

We took DS to see Wallace & Gromit last week (he's 4 in Jan), and though he didn't stay in the same seat he was pretty much ok, much to our astonished joy. He got to eat a bag of sweets and have some pop while watching a hugh TV!! What more could any kid want?
