Do big babies take longer to move?

My ds is nearly 14 weeks old and 17lb and very long. When he's lying on the floor he makes no effort whatsoever to roll to the side at all. In fact, he just tends to lie still apart from waving his arms to grab the dangly mobile above his head.

I'm not at all concerned because I know babies develop at different times, but I'm curious to know if it's usual for bigger babies to be slower at moving themselves. His peers at the postnatal group are all smaller and seem to be moving much more, some rolling over.

As I said, I'm not concerned at all, just curious to know what other big babies' development has been like.

My dd was 90th centile at this age (sorry can't remember exact weight) and she hardly ever rolled over. She could do it, just couldn't be bothered I think. I think bigger babies are less mobile at this age.

Yep, he's 90th centile too. His strong legs make up for it though - he's been bearing weight on them since he was just a week old. I like my men big, strong and cuddly though so he's a 'chip off the old block'.

Have to disagree here, my DS was (and still is!!) a big baby - 96th centile weight, off the charts height, as was never still! At 14 weeks he was near to rolling over and he was walking by the time he was one. I think it's much more to do with the child and what they feel like doing. A friends DD never rolled over, just sat up one day! And she never crawled either, just decided to walk at 14 months......

ds was large and walked at 13-14 months, never crawled (he did a hilarious bum-shuffle though), and seems to get to all his milestones at about the average/slightly late times. He also never lay on his stomach (prob becaue it was too big
He's now a lean wriggly active little three yr old - I have no worries about him.

My DS sounds like Wedgiesmums friend's DD. He rolled over once at the usual age (is it 4 months?) but then didn't bother again for ages. He also sat up at exactly 6 months. He also didn't crawl/shuffle. His first independent movement was cruising but he had to be put in an upright position ie couldn't pull himself up. That was at 10 months. Pulled himself up using my legs for first time on his first birthday by which time he could already walk several steps. He was always an upright baby liked to held against chest rather than in arms, could bear weight early etc. Would only go on front to sleep. So agree with WM that it is child's inclination.

my ds was also above 91th centile and late in everything (started crawling and pulled himself up at 10mo) but suspect he is just a bit lazy... his sister at 50th centile is much quicker in things (starting the same things at 6 mo) but also much more curious, constantely looking around and trying to grab things

Got to say my dd was tiny 9th centile and was v-e-r-y s-l-o-w to move and my ds was 98th centile and was born running up the walls. All kids are different dont worry

I was a big baby (9 lbs at birth and stayed big) and I walked at just 10 months.

My DS was 90th centile from about 4 weeks old and he rolled over and crawled earlier than most of my friends' babies, then walked just before he was 1.

DD was small (25th centile), only crawled for 2 weeks then walked at 9.5 months.

So I guess it does come down to the individual child.

I think maybe he's more into cognitive development..he's quite 'thoughtful' and will happily spend time just gazing at things. Being my first bab I have nothing to compare him to. I guess he's just like me (poor thing )

I don't think ds rolled over til about 5 months. Like a lot of things, he knew it was out there, he just didn't seem to be able to entirely work out. With everything his brain seems to get there long before his body can. Which is just like his Mum and Dad - I know that my brain certainly gave up on my body and went off on its own years ago!

Don't think it's so much size, as genetics (although there's obviously, therefore, a link, but I don't think it's a direct cause).

And I felt throughly vindicated when ds came out short and fat, obviously my natural state!

dejags · 27/10/2003 15:49

Although DS wasn't that heavy when born (8lb10) he grew at an alarming rate (over the 100th centile from about 6 weeks). He was a very big/chubby baby.

I seem to remember him rolling over at 4 months, crawling at 8 months, he started cruising the day after he started crawling and walked on his own from 10 months.
