Sorry if I am repeating this message, I put it in the wrong folder to start with. Anyway here it goes. What has happened to my happy toddler? Ds is 2.3 and for a few weeks now is clingy at playgroups, and uneasy around the kids, also very paranoid about whichever toy he is playing with, and brings it to me for storage. He is slightly younger than other boys who are more boisterous and push and sometimes hit to get their way. Ds likes playing chase games with them, but will run to me if overwhelmed. How can I encourage his confidence, I normally intervene and tell off the other kid if he is being pushed/hit. Not sure I am handling it right. Until a month or so ago, he was very confident at all the groups, busied himself and certainly did not cling to me. Has had a series of bugs, so maybe a bit out of shape, but would love to hear from mums who have boys who are not (not yet anyway)boisterous.

I have a girl, and she's 2 next week, but....I can relate to DD going through a phase like this. It went on for weeks, easily overwhelmed, crying when other kids (esp boys) came near her, not standing up for herself, etc. - and I was concerned - but I needn't have been, as it turned out. She suddenly got stroppier at home, more moody, stronger in her likes/dislikes, and at the same time more assertive with other kids - I try and remind myself of the positive social effect whenever she kicks off at home now
I asked for feedback at the time, just as you have, and was told to support her as much as possible through it - intervening on her behalf till she felt better able to; sounds like you're doing exactly that. Bet the bugs are accountable for much of the clinginess, too. Hope some Mums of boys chime in, am sure it would be more reassuring from them...

Ds is 21 months and has suddenly become incredibly clingy. He disolves into floods of tears if I or dp leave the room. He's with a childminder during the day and he's the same with her. Yesterday morning dp gave ds and I a lift, stopping off for petrol along the way. When dp left the car to pay for the petrol ds became inconsolable even though I was with him. He's still pretty outgoing and I think he's fine with other children too, but that's probably because he's with them all day. He has been cutting molars recently and had a cold too, so I've put it down to that. He's never been a crier, so it's come as a bit of a shock and I'm not quite sure what to do about it. I know this isn't much help to you, but I just wanted you to know that there are other children going through similar changes.

Well, im in the same boat ds is 3.2 am hoping to make ppt with health visitor nxt week. Have had 3 yrs of clinginss and crying at nurseries and childminder, am at my wits end, but can completely empathise If anyone hasany ideas at all pls pls share. We have tried rewards charts etc to no avail. He cries when we go to my mums house when we first get there even though he adores her and vice versa. He has allways had his own mind but seeing as we may hopefully ttc in the new year, it would be nice to be able to see him go to the childminders etc without so much stress. help

DD turned clingy at 2. I put it down to her staying with lots of different people in the run up to my wedding, but since then (and reading all this) I think it was more age related.

She used to be fine with strangers, would run into toddler groups and be gone, and then suddenly cried at people (even ones she knew), and clung to me at toddler groups.

She's now 30 months, and is finally starting to relax again.... Not tried her with a toddler group lately, but she is much better at not crying when people walk in now!!!

Went to a Xmas party today and he held my hand for the first 10 minutes, he wanted to play with me, and only me. I would not have minded so much, except that I have flu, and I just wanted to sit in a corner and sleep....But after 10 minutes he relaxed and played by himself and the other kids. I am sure he will be allright.Thankyou.
