Do you wake yr newborn for night feeds?

Ds is 1wk old, we are topping up regularly with ebm as he has poss tongue tie. Doula says nor to let him gonfor longer than 3 hrs without a feed even at night. He was unsettled and hungry all morning when I let him sleep for 5 hrs the other night. Once he is feeding efficiently and not needing topups, I can just leave him to sleep till he wakes for a feed, right?

Just recycling this thread as I'm pondering the same question - DS2 is 2 weeks old and feeding 2-3 hourly during the day, but for the last 3 nights has slept from 11-4am without a feed. I've actually woken up myself and initiated the feed.
I'm quite happy to get a longer stretch of sleep but seeing comments like 'disastrous for your milk supply' makes me worry that I should wake him, at least after 4 hours.
DS1 fed 3 hourly like clockwork at night until 8 months which I think was due to getting in the habit of 3 hourly night feeds.
It's probably worth adding that my milk came in really early (day 2) and I havent had any engorgement issues - DS2 is a really efficient feeder and supply seems to be good (wet and dirty nappy with each feed and can pump 5oz from a soft feeling boob).
Any experience/ comments welcome.

Sorry just realised this fits better into feeding section (thought that's where I found it!) Will try to get it moved...

I'd never wake a baby up during the night to feed. However I always feed every 2-3 hours during the day even if that means waking them. I believe it helps them to understand day from night and also helps to ensure they are having most of their milk during the day.

I may be just lucky and of course I formula fed but both mine have gradually taken longer between feeds at night doing this and have both started sleeping through 6-6 at about 12 weeks.

I've never woken DS to feed. As long as there's no medical issues, let them sleep! He's always woken up when hungry and have had no supply issues.

It might take a while to regulate your supply after tt issues- you're doing well and the 3hr thing is good for your circumstances. How did monday go? The night feeds are also important in stimulating next days supply.

Once you and HV are happy ds is gaining and supply/feeding sorted you can relax and go with the flow more. Hope you're in less pain now- I found the relief instant!
A wee reminder that once baby is going more than 3 hrs between bf, no more contraceptive protection guaranteed- just incase you're thinking about it! ( definitely not in my case!!)

Thanks for your responses ladies. My main concern was breastmilk supply in the early 'establishing' weeks. We're seeing the midwife on Friday for his weigh-in so I guess that will give me a good indication (as well as nappies and contentedness).

Saphies thanks for your detailed response, it was actually the OP from last year who had the tongue tie issues. My LO is an avid feeder with no tt issues, do you still think supply may be affected?
(And I hadn't thought of the contraceptive aspect, thanks for the reminder :) )
