How many teeth altogether?

I'm confused, my Mum-friends are confused too (either first timers like me, or had kids so long ago they can't remember), so help please....DD is 2 next week: I thought she had all her teeth, and was done with teething, because someone told me they only get one set of molars (ie four of them altogether) first time around. But I keep seeing posts about 2-3 year olds teething? Someone straighten me out!

They only have the one set of molars, 20 teeth in total. But they can take up to the age of 3 to cut.

ItllBeLonelymumThisChristmas · 12/12/2005 21:03

They get 20 teeth in total first time round, 8 of which are molars. But it is normal (I hope!) to not get the back 4 molars until around about 3.

HunkerXmasAndAMunkerNewYear · 12/12/2005 21:04

Two sets of molars, surely? DS has four molars, four incisors and found canines and room for four more molars to complete the set when he's two-ish (oh joy, really looking forward to those coming through!).

ItllBeLonelymumThisChristmas · 12/12/2005 21:05

How do you work that out WWB? They have 4 incisors at the top and 4 at the bottom (8), plus 2 canines at the top and 2 at the bottom (4), leaving another 8 teeth before they have the set of 20.

WigWamBam · 12/12/2005 21:05

4 pre-molars, 4 molars. I wasn't counting the pre-molars as molars but maybe they are.

FrostyTheGloworm · 12/12/2005 21:06

yep, those back teeth appear about a year after you though they had finished teething

ItllBeLonelymumThisChristmas · 12/12/2005 21:06

Oh now you are leaving me behind!

WigWamBam · 12/12/2005 21:07

And confusing myself in the process, LM

20 teeth in total, anyway.

ItllBeLonelymumThisChristmas · 12/12/2005 21:08

Yeah, we'll stick to that and let everyone else work it out!

NotHavingXmasInChicagomum · 12/12/2005 21:08

Baby teeth are labelled a,b,c,d,e in each quarter of the mouth (20 in total consisting of 2 incisors a canine and 2 molars in each quarter). Adult teeth are labelled 1 to 8 in each quarter (32 in total consisting of 2 incisors, acanine, 2 premolars and 3 molars in each quarter). Teethnig age varies greatly, the text books quote figures that are derived from taking an average age from a huge group so some kids are earlier some later etc.

HRHQueenOfQuelNoel · 12/12/2005 21:09

The average time and usual order of appearance is

  • Four central incisors (cutters) start appearing at around 6-7 months
  • Four more side incisors appear at around 8 months
  • Four back molars (chewing teeth) appear at between 10-14 months
  • Four canines (pointed teeth) appear at around 16-20 months.
  • Four more back molars appear at between 24-30 months.
EliBeentoSantasGrotto · 12/12/2005 21:09

Aha. I see (I think). So we have four more molars to come, oh joy of joys....hmm, wonder if some of the recent drooling and crappy behaviour is tooth related, was putting it down to (unrequited) chocolate-lust and almost-two-ishness...

there is no such thing as premolars in "baby" teeth.

HunkerXmasAndAMunkerNewYear · 12/12/2005 21:11

And if anyone should know, it's you, CM! How was work today? How are you?

EliBeentoSantasGrotto · 12/12/2005 21:12

I'm going to annoy DD and count properly tomorrow - I think she only has 16, but lost track. I do remember she got her canines just before her (existing) molars. Anyway, thanks!

So I got the name for them wrong. So shoot me

I got the right number though ...

HRHQueenOfQuelNoel · 12/12/2005 21:13

I think DS2 has got all but 2 of his teeth through now...........but I'm not sticking my finger in hismouth to check

EliBeentoSantasGrotto · 12/12/2005 21:14

Good point, HRH, perhaps I'll ask DH to do it

Hi hunker how was the meet up? Work was ok once I got there. DH was off sick so I had to take the kids to the nanny's house as he didn't want her over at ours. The ds had terrible diarheoa (?sp) and soiled all the changes of clothes he had with him but seems ok now. Then got pulled over by the police on my way home as a bulb has blown (but they just told me to get it sorted)

HunkerXmasAndAMunkerNewYear · 12/12/2005 21:20

Blimey, eventful day! The meet-up was good - sorry you weren't there, but will make sure the next one's not on a Monday! Hope DS and DH are feeling better soon.

NotHavingXmasInChicagomum · 12/12/2005 21:24

Tell me about it! Just glad I only have to do it one day a week. DD has here first xmas show at school tomorrow afternoon (her nursery class are singing "when santa got stuck up the chimney"). Am going to do the proud/embarassing mum thing with the video camera (although tonoght at bed time she was saying she doesn't want to do it as the mummys and daddys will be too scary (unless they promise to close their eyes and not look at her when she is on the stage). I don't think she gets that they will be more intersted in their own kids and not her
